Jonny Wanzer (born July 24, 1988) is an American comedian and political satirist from Burlington, Vermont. His comedy primarily focuses on socioeconomic and political issues in Vermont.

Early life

Jonny Wanzer was born in Burlington, Vermont to a single mother. He grew up moving around Chittenden and Franklin County every other year and graduated from South Burlington High School.[1] He spent several years living around the country before returning to Vermont in 2012 and worked a variety of retail and service jobs, while pursuing a failed career in music.[1]

Career

In 2019, Wanzer wanted to change his approach to music after studying cults of personality and the industry's shifting reliance on self-made social media platforms. While working on an album about being a townie, he was ignored by several local video creators when wanting to create a music video for his first single. He then decided to do it himself, using only an iPhone, duct taped to a mic stand, in front of a bed sheet, editing the video himself using iMovie. After releasing the video, which lampooned local access channels in Vermont, laced with specific jokes about the state, the reception to the comedy persuaded him to pursue comedic videos instead of music[1], landing him his first news interview on local Burlington news station, WCAX, for a viral video he created on a local mall development; the fourth video he had ever made. [2]

From that point, he stuck to making videos about Burlington that at times were parodies of local tourism guides. Gradually he started to lean into politics, putting his own satirical spin on the local news,[1] amassing him dozens of viral videos on Instagram and TikTok, landing him his own show called Jonny Wanzer's Promo Videos on streaming service, Means TV.

Jonny Wanzer's Promo Videos

Jonny Wanzer's Promo Videos premiered on MeanTV on August 1st, 2021.[3] The show is a left-wing, gonzo journalism show, which primarily focuses on satirizing socioeconomic and political issues in Vermont as well as Vermont culture in general, mostly through the guise of his Vermont native side character "Donny Wanzer". The show is currently in its 2nd season.[4]

Personal life

Wanzer currently lives in Burlington, Vermont, where he runs his own video production company, OldBoy Productions LLC, making videos full time as well as producing other creators who focus on Vermont.[5]
