Rivalry between Jordan and Syria is one of the old, long and heated rivalry between Jordan and Syria, two nations in the Levant Quartet.[1]
Root of rivalry[edit]
Jordan and Syria share a relatively long and complicated tie between two nations. Being parts of the Levant, Jordan and Syria share extensive close tie between two countries. While two nations share much common history, relationship between two became extremely strained after the end of World War II.[2]
Following the establishment of pan-Arabist Ba'ath Party at 1960s, Jordan and Syria engaged in a military conflict at 1970, when the Black September occurred as Hafez al-Assad sought to meddle in Jordan.[3] Hussein of Jordan, angered with the Syrians over the loss of West Bank, asked the United States to attack Syria.[4] In 1980s, relations further deteriorated as Jordan sought to make peace with Israel, and Syria accused Jordan for being a Zionist.[5]
By this point, Syria and Jordan's complicated relationship also paved way for their heated rivalry. Starting from 1950s, the rivalry grew tenser at 1960s onward. Syria was initially, more successful than Jordan, but the tie changed since 2000s with Jordan obtained more international successes than Syria. Thus, adding with political tensions, the rivalry became even more heated by time.
