Jorgen Breuning (“Jørgen” in Danish, (17 May 1935 – 07 March 2022) was a Danish engineer. He is internationally known for being the pioneer of voided biaxial concrete slabs.

After military education as an officer, Jorgen Breuning studied at the Technical University of Denmark, from which he graduated in 1965. He worked closely with Professor Mogens P. Nielsen in the practical use of the yield line theory[1], developed by K.W. Johansen. He specialized in special building systems, in particular advanced shell structures, which provided him with in-depth knowledge of optimizing concrete structures.

Following the design of the one-way, hollow core slab in the 1950s, after many years of a lack of innovative ideas in the construction industry, the Danish Ministry of Housing held a design competition in 1997 with the aim of bringing about a starting point that would lead to the development of flexible and sustainable structures. Unfortunately, the competition did not lead to any breakthroughs. However, the idea intrigued Jorgen Breuning.

Soon after, Jorgen Breuning invented the BubbleDeck technology[2], the first true bi-axial hollow flat slab, which fulfilled the demands for flexibility, sustainability and material reduction within the construction industry. He dedicated the rest of his life to traveling the world giving lectures, teaching, publications and articles[3] and spreading the knowledge of optimizing concrete constructions.

He was also a Member of the Dutch CUR-Committee[4] setting Dutch Rules in construction from 1998 to 2000.

The BD technology has been used in award-winning projects like Harpa Concert Hall[5] in Reykjavik, Iceland by Henning Larsens Architects, which won the Mies van der Rohe Award[6] in 2013, and has received awards worldwide due to the system’s positive environmental effect and advantages in execution of building projects.
