1LT JOSE KARE PAAC, a local of Malinao, Albay was the only Filipino fighter pilot in World War 2 to have a confirmed fighter aircraft "kill", a Mitsubishi A6M2 Model Zero Japanese naval fighter aircraft. Many Filipino fighter pilots would claim kills during their respective air engagements with Japanese warplanes but only Captain Villamor's G3M "Nell" bomber kill and Lieutenant Kare's Zero kill were confirmed... Though many of the Zeros were trailing smoke after engagements with the Filipino fighter pilots of the 6th Pursuit Squadron, the Japanese never confirmed if these were able to return to their bases at Formosa later Taiwan.

THE FILIPINO FIGHTER PILOT WITH A CONFIRMED JAPANESE A6M ZERO FIGHTER AIRCRAFT KILL

1LT JOSE KARE joined the Philippine Army Air Corps Flying School (PAACFS) the precursor to the Philippine Air Force Flying School as a flying cadet and became a member of the Philippine Army Air Corps Flying School Class of 1938. He achieved the feat flying an obsolete P-26 Peashooter in shooting down a Japanese Naval Zero fighter on 23 December 1941 over the Ragay Gulf, his kill was confirmed by coast watchers in the area... KARE was wounded during the engagement, but managed to return to his base at Batangas. 1LT KARE was also on Zablan airfield on 10 December 1941 when the Japanese attacked the PAAC base... He tried taking-off with his P-26 Peashooter, but while taxiing down the runway, he was shot at by a Zero and his plane swerved violently to the left... He quickly jumps-off the plane and in just a few yards, the plane exploded. The Japanese pilots’ has greater combat experience and the superior maneuverability of their fighters gave them a distinct advantage... Facing them with an obsolete P-26A Peashooter is considered a suicide... LT Kare did it shooting down a Mitsubishi A6M2 Model Zero naval fighter plane. The Americans can't imagine how he made it! After the war CAPT. JOSE KARE joined the airlines, people close to him describe him as a humble and soft spoken person... Probably the reason a proper recognition is yet to be given to this legendary Filipino fighter pilot.
