Jose "Pele" Landi is a professional MMA and Vale Tudo fighter for many organizations including Pride.[1] Jose Landi was the International Vale Tudo Championship middleweight champion (IVC 1999) after he defeated Rafael Cordeiro. Landi was born in Cuba, but moved to Brazil at the age of 7.[2] Landi is a Cuban-Brazilian vale tudo fighter known for his eccentric attitude and exciting style of fighting. Landi's style is primarily Muay Thai, but he also practices Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in which he holds a black belt. Landi was a member of Chute Boxe Academy,[1] and is ranked as one of the top 10 black fighters in mixed martial arts.[2]

Chute Box[edit]

He was formerly affiliated with the world famous Chute Boxe Academy, eventually leaving as the result of feeling betrayed by the head of Chute Boxe, Rudimar. It is thought that Rudimar went back on financial agreements made with Landi who now fights with Revolution Fight Team in British Columbia, Canada. In November 23, 2011, he returned to the legendary team Chute Boxe Academy.[3]

Landi was the former coach of Anderson Silva with whom he had a well known feud.[4][5][6] This feud came about after Landi defeated former UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva twice.[4] The first time he beat Anderson Silva was in 1995. [7]Other sources attribute the feud to a dispute over the accuracy of a passage in a book by Anderson.[6] Landi has well documented wins over former Bellator Middleweight Championship Alexander Shlemenko, former UFC Welterweight Champion / UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes, and UFC Hall of Fame Pat Miletich.[4] Landi was known for breaking his leg in a fight against Brian Gassaway at TKO 32 – Ultimatum in 2008. In 2014, Landi would agree to fight Ben Saunders for the vacant welterweight title of Titan FC.[8]

Early Career[edit]

One of his biggest MMA wins came at 4:45 of the first round in Shidokan Jitsu-Warriors War 1 when he brutally knocked out future UFC champion Matt Hughes with a knee. Another big win for Landi was when he beat UFC champion Pat Miletich by TKO in 2000. He lost to future UFC champion Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell at IVC 6, losing by decision. But Landi's most famous fights are his two wins against jiu-jitsu fighter Jorge "Macaco" Patino in the vale tudo rings of Brazil. The two had a very hostile feud leading up to and during the fights. Landi also holds two victories over former Bellator Middleweight Champion, veteran Alexander Shlemenko.

Pride Fighting Championships[edit]

In his short stint with Pride FC, Landi went 0–2. He lost his debut to Daijiro Matsui by decision. His last fight was against Carlos Newton, which he lost by first round armbar.

Titan Fighting Championship[edit]

Landi signed with Titan Fighting Championship in February 2014.[9]
