Joselin Nazareno (April 6, 1943 – September 13, 2006) is a Philippine Army General who served as the 28th Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines from 1998 to September 1999. He was appointed by President Joseph Ejercito Estrada vice General Clemente Mariano who reached his mandatory retirement age[1]. He was appointed as ambassador to Pakistan after bowing out from the service[2]
Early Life and Education
Nazareno was born on April 6, 1943, in Cebu City and finished High School at Abellana National High School in 1961[3]. He entered Philippine Military Academy in 1962 and graduated in 1966[4].
Military Career
He joined the Philippine Army upon graduation and was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in 1966. He commanded the 37th Infantry Battalion and became camp commander of Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City before rising to higher echelons. In 1995, he commanded 4th Infantry Division based in Camp Evangelista, Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental [2]. He was part of the GRP Panel during the Peace Talks with MILF, which resulted in the General Cessation of Hostilities agreement with MILF. He was then appointed as Commander of AFP Southern Command in 1996.
He was appointed as Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in 1998 [5] vice General Clemente Mariano. During his term, the AFP was dealing with Chinese intrusion and structure building at Spratlys[6] and the kidnapping rampage of Abu Sayyaf. He was extended until July 8, 1999.
Death
He died on September 13, 2006, at Makati Medical Center due to lung cancer.[7]
