Joseph Calata (born July 31, 1980) is a Filipino businessman who served as the chairman and chief executive officer of Calata Corporation,[1] a company formerly listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange.
Early years[edit]
At the age of 31, he became the youngest chairman and CEO of a publicly listed company in the history of the Philippine Stock Exchange when Calata Corporation (CAL) had its Initial Public Offering in 2012 with a value of P2.7 billion. CAL was among the few select 200 companies that were able to list in the PSE.[2]
Joseph was regarded as the youngest self-made billionaire in the country.[3]
Calata Corporation[edit]
Calata Corporation (CAL) was originally incorporated as Planters Choice Agro Products, Inc. on July 23, 1999. On February 22, 2010, the Securities and Exchange Commission approved the change in corporate name to the present one. CAL is primarily involved in livestock and agricultural business. On February 6, 2012, the Company amended its primary purpose as a prelude to its plans to create a subsidiary to handle its retail business, and on the same year had its first IPO.[1]
The Company is a combined distributor of agro-chemicals, feeds, fertilizers, veterinary medicines and other agricultural products coming from manufacturers or business partners such as San Miguel Corporation for B-Meg Feeds and veterinary products; Syngenta, Bayer, Jardine, Dupont, Sinochem, for agro-chemicals; East West Seeds, Monsanto, Planters Products for agricultural seeds; and Swire, Viking for fertilizers.
CAL has three operating segments namely, distribution, retail, and farming. CAL currently distributes agro-products, animal feeds, fertilizers, agro-chemicals, seeds, soya, meat, and swine livestock. Meanwhile, the Company’s retail operation is carried out through Agri Phil Corporation (Agri Phil), a wholly-owned subsidiary. Agri Phil is engaged in the trade of feeds, agrochemicals, veterinary medicine, fertilizers and seeds. Lastly, for its farming segment, CAL undertook several projects, namely, Swine Livestock Breeder Farm, Broiler Breeder Farm, Broiler Growing Farm, and Swine Livestock Growing Farm. On Nov 8, 2015, Calata Corporation achieved a Guinness World Record for the largest serving of roast pork beating Mexico's record. Held at the Liwasang Aurora, Quezon City Memorial Circle, this event also served as a celebratory feast and an early Christmas treat for the less privileged residents of Metro Manila, as part of the company's 16th anniversary. This event was also the launching of a new business segment of Calata Corporation's meat business.[4]
Controversy[edit]
His company, Calata Corporation, was ordered delisted by the Philippine Stock Exchange on November 3, 2017 for violations of PSE Disclosure and Delisting Rules. [5]
On April 14, 2015, the Bureau of Internal Revenue filed a case against Joseph Calata for failure to supply correct and accurate information in his annual income tax return for 2011 with a tax liability of P144.49 million. The case was dismissed on June 8, 2016 by the Department of Justice for insufficiency of evidence. [6]
The Bureau of Internal Revenue on Oct. 28, 2022, charged Calata and Agri Phil Corp., for a total tax liability of P88.86 million, inclusive of increments, for the taxable year 2012. It was also dismissed by the Department of Justice on February 27, 2023 for lack of probable cause and due to insufficiency of evidence. [7]
Recognition[edit]
He was given the EXEMPLARY MEN OF INFLUENCE recognition by the Philippine Cancer Society in 2012.[8]
In 2013, He participated in the Young Business Leaders Initiative (YBLI) of the Asia New Zealand Foundation. [9]
In 2015, was declared one of the winners of the NEXT GENERATION GLOBAL FRANCHISE LEADER award held at the International Franchise Association Franchise Convention, USA.[10]
In 2017, he was among the panel of investors in History Channel's THE FINAL PITCH SEASON 1. A reality TV show featuring entrepreneurs presenting their business pitch to a panel of investors for funding.[11]
In 2017, He was also one of the awardees in MEN WHO MATTER given by Stargate People Asia Magazine [12]
Philanthropy works[edit]
He donated P2 million in his personal capacity to his alma mater, De La Salle University for its AGSI (Agrivet Science Institute) scholarship fund.[13]
