Joseph Halevi (born 1946 in Haifa, then British Mandate of Palestine) is a post‑Keynesian economist and political economist. He is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Political Economy at the University of Sydney and faculty member of the International University College of Turin.[2]

Early life and education

Halevi was born in Haifa in 1946.[1] He spent most of his early life in Rome, where he graduated in philosophy and political economy from Sapienza University of Rome.[3]

Academic career

New York

He began teaching economics at the New School for Social Research in New York and later held a position at Rutgers University.[4]

University of Sydney

Halevi joined the Department of Political Economy at the University of Sydney around 1978 and taught there until his retirement in 2016.[5] He founded and taught the course Economic Theories of Modern Capitalism, covering classical, Marxian, neoclassical and Keynesian systems in historical context.[6]

Turin and INET

Since about 2010 he has been a faculty member at the International University College of Turin, Italy.[7] He remains associated with the Institute for New Economic Thinking.[8]

Economic thought

Halevi is a prominent figure in Post‑Keynesian economics, emphasizing effective demand, income distribution, historical time and institutional context as central analytical categories.His work often draws on Kaleckian macroeconomics and the long‑run dynamics of accumulation and growth.

Recognition

He is widely respected as an educator, especially for his narrative teaching style and his storytelling approach to economic theory, as showcased in his farewell lecture at Sydney in August 2015.[13]
