Tim Vlandas is a Britiash political economist, Course Director of comparative social policy [1] at the Department of Social Policy and Intervention, University of Oxford. He is also governing body fellow of St Antony's college at Oxford..[2], where he is based at the European Studies Centre[3], together with Timothy Garton Ash[4] and Kalypso Nicolaidis[5]. He teaches in the areas of comparative social policy, economics of social policy, and comparative research design. He is the currently in the departmental leadership as course director for Comparative Social Policy[1].


Early Life and Education[edit]

Tim Vlandas is the grandson of Dimitris Vlantas who was General in charge of the Democratic Army of Greece during the Greek Civil War. He grew up in Brussels where he attended the European Schoo and left for the UK after finishing high school. He first studied Economics at the University of Southampton and then at London School of Economics, where he got his MSc in European Political Economy in 2007 and his PhD in 2013, supervised by Marco Simoni Matteo Renzi and Paolo Gentiloni[6]. He also studied at School of Oriental and African Studies, the University of London, where he got an MSc in Development Economics in 2009.[7]

Career[edit]

He was a Lecturer in Politics in the Department of Politics and International Relations at University of Reading from 2013 till 2018. Later he was appointed as an Associate Professor of Comparative Social Policy at the Department of Social Policy and Intervention, University of Oxford[7], and Governing Body Fellow at St Antony's College, University of Oxford[2]

Research[edit]

Vlandas has research interests in comparative welfare states and political economy, the welfare state, and labour market policy.[7][8]. His research has been published in Comparative Political Studies[9] (currently ranked 5th in political sciences by google scholar[10]), the Socio-Economic Review[11] (currently ranked 18th in sociology by good scholar[12]), Political Science Research and Methods[13], the Journal of Common Market Studies[14] (currently ranked 6th in political sciences by google scholar[10]), the Journal of European Social Policy[15], Politics&Society[16], the European Journal of Industrial Relations[17], Comparative European Politics[18], French Politics[19], Basic Income Studies[20], Nations&Nationalism[21], the Review of European Economic Policy[22], European Political Science[23], and the Routledge Handbook of Euroscepticism[24].

His work has been widely cited by international organisations, for instance the European Commission[25], the World Bank[26], the OECD[27], the ILO[28], the National Bank of Poland[29], the European Parliament[30], and the United Nations[31]. In addition, his research is also referred in a wide range of media outlets and thinktanks, for instance, thinkprogress[32], The conversation[33], The Huffingtonpost[34], the Swedish financial site Di[35], the finish Peruste newspaper[36], the Swedish Arbetet newspaper[37], the crisis observatory[38], and the world bank blog[39]. He also regularly gives talks and training to the trade union movement, for instance the European Trade Union Confederation[40] and the International Trade Union Confederation[41].

Vlandas is one of the standing group convenors of the Changing Political Economies and Welfare States section at the European Consortium of Political Research[42] and he is serving on the Best Article in European Politics&Society Award Committee of the American Political Science Association[43]. He is also the chair of the European Political project at the European Studies Centre[44]. He recently gave the plenary session at the 2019 conference of the International Public Policy Association[45] and he was a keynote speaker at the 2019 conference of the Italian European Social Policy Network Association[46][47]
