Joseph Hearne is a bass player who has performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra for 60 years. He is the longest-serving musician in the BSO's 200+ year history.[1] This record was previously held by deceased violinist Rolland Tapley at 59 years.[2]
Life
Joseph Hearne was born in Ohio in 1942 and, as a child, he moved with his family to Portland, Oregon. While in Portland, he started playing the double bass and became a member of the Portland Symphony Orchestra and the Aspen Festival Orchestra in Colorado. Upon graduating high school in Portland, he moved to New York City to study with Stuart Sankey at the Julliard School of Music. Hearne received the Eleanor Saterlee Memorial Scholarship to study at Juilliard. During his second year at Juilliard, he auditioned for the Boston Symphony. The following fall, in September 1962, at the age of 20, he became a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.[3]
In addition to performing with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, he was a member of The Incredible String Quartet, an ensemble of four double basses that has played both locally and nationally, performing at a luncheon honoring Seiji Ozawa at the Tokyo Press Club in Japan and on the NBC's The Today Show with Gene Shalit. [citation needed]
Hearne is married to author and illustrator Jan Brett, and works with her as an artist representative.[4]
