Joseph R. Rullo (born September 9, 1969) is a small business owner affiliated with the Republican Party who is running for Governor of New Jersey in 2017.
Political career
In 2012, Rullo ran for the Republican Senate nomination, coming in third in the primaries after David Douglass Brown and the winner of the nomination, Joe Kyrillos. [1] Kyrillos ultimately lost the general election to incumbent Robert Menendez of the Democratic Party.
Rullo was the first candidate to announce his candidacy for the 2017 New Jersey Gubernatorial Election, announcing his intentions in mid-2015. He is currently the only "outsider" candidate running in the election, with all other major candidates being political officeholders. [2]
Positions
Marijuana Legalization One of Rullo's core policies is the statewide legalization of Marijuana, following the example of numerous states that have already legalized the drug. Rullo believes that legalization would save the state money in policing, generate significant tax revenue, and effectively eliminate the black market for marijuana, thereby reducing crime rates. [3]
Transportation Rullo has strongly opposed the recently introduced 23-cent gas tax by Governor Chris Christie, and vowed to repeal it and find alternative funding for roads and transportation. Additionally, Rullo has pledged to dissolve the Transportation Trust Fund, replacing it with a more transparent and efficient fund. He frequently cites corruption in transportation as a major problem in New Jersey and has stated his intention to eradicate it. [4]
Veteran Relief Throughout his campaign, Rullo has advocated for the complete elimination of state income tax on veterans' pensions and for improving overall conditions for veterans. He has pledged to create a new "Veteran's Affairs" cabinet position to oversee initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life for New Jersey veterans. [5]
Support for Donald Trump Since Donald Trump was nominated as the Republican Presidential Candidate, Rullo has fully supported him. Despite the controversy surrounding the now-president-elect, Rullo believed it was important to stand by the party's nominee. He has criticized fellow candidates Jack Ciattarelli and Kim Guadagno for withdrawing their support from the nominee, calling for their withdrawal due to their support of Hillary Clinton. [6]
