Joseph Wong (Professor)

Professor Joseph Wong is the Vice President, International of University of Toronto.[1]

Education[edit]

Wong has a bachelor’s degree from McGill University and both a Master's degree and a Ph.D from University of Wisconsin-Madison.[1][2]

Career[edit]

Wong's career includes time working for the World Bank and United Nations.[1]

From 2006 to 2016, Wong held the Canada Research Chair in health, democracy and development.[1]

From 2005 to 2014, he was the Director of the Asian Institute at the Munk School of Global Affairs.[1]

In 2013, Wong was awarded University of Toronto Faculty of Political Science's Outstanding Teaching Award.[3]

Professor Wong is a professor of political science at the University of Toronto, and the Roz and Ralph Halbert Professor of Innovation at the Munk School of Global Affairs.[1][4]

Wong has served both as the Associate Vice-President and as the Vice-Provost of the University of Toronto.[3]

In 2019 Professor Wong spoke of the importance for students to be able to speak freely about political issues and to be safe when doing so.[5]

He was appointed as the Vice President, International at University of Toronto, in 2021[2] after being given the role on an interim basis in 2020.[6]

At University of Toronto, Professor Wong helped introduce new academic designations[6] as part of a wider effort to encourage more international study by Canadian students.[7]

Wong founded the Reach Alliance, a student-led project that researches ways for organizations and governments to get essential services to marginalized people in the most difficult to reach locations.[1][8]

He serves on the board of directors of Upper Canada College.[9]

Cornell University Press have published his books Healthy Democracies: Welfare Politics In Taiwan and South Korea and Betting on Biotech: Innovation and the Limits of Asia’s Developmental State.[1]

Joe is married to his wife, Jennifer, and they have a son called Oliver.[9]
