Josephine Burton (born 1977) is an English theatre director, playwright, podcast host, producer, and Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Dash Arts[1]which she co-founded with Tim Supple in 2005.[2]

She creates cross-artform theatre from real-life testimonies exploring identity, migration and global conflict.

Burton has created cross-form art-form works and produced plays at numerous venues and festivals including the Barbican[3], the Royal Albert Hall, the Roundhouse[4], Southbank Centre, the V&A[5], Latitude[6], the Rich Mix[7], the British Library[8], Sadler’s Wells [9]and the Edinburgh International Festival. [10]

Burton is a guest tutor on Mountview’s MA in Site Specific Theatre Practice[11], a music advisor for PRS Foundation [12]and a professional vocalist.  She is also the co-creator of Home which provides musical encounters with migrant artists in people’s homes to raise funds for shelters for refugees and asylum seekers in the UK.

She hosts the Dash Arts Podcast[13], bringing together academics, artists, authors and communities to explore contemporary issues.

Early Life and Education

Burton grew up in London and graduated with an MA in Classics from Balliol College, Oxford University in 1999. She also studied at Columbia University and the Marcel Hicter European Cultural Foundation. During her time at university, Burton practiced drama and arts journalism.

In 1998 she co-founded the modern klezmer band Oi Va Voi with Jonathan Walton and formed YaD,[14] an organization that promoted the arts of the Jewish diaspora.

Themes

Burton is known for immersive, cross-disciplinary theatre with political themes. Her work explores issues such as immigration,[41] British identity, colonial history, and the war in Ukraine[42], often developed with both professional and non-professional performers from diverse backgrounds. Drawing on real-life testimonies, her productions feature movement, poetry, and music—from folk to classical to rap.[43] Through workshops, public events, podcasts and academic partnerships Burton invites ongoing dialogue.[44]
