Josh Gruss[2] is the Chairman, CEO and Co-founder of Round Hill Music[3] Royalty Partners. He is also an investment banker[4], entrepreneur and the guitarist[5][6] and songwriter for the hard rock band Rubikon[7].
Early Life
Josh Gruss earned an MBA from Columbia University, London Business School and graduated with a B.A. from Trinity College[8]. Gruss also studied music business and guitar at Berklee College of Music in Boston[9] [10]. Before Gruss founded Round Hill Music in 2011, he worked at Sony Music, Atlantic Records[11], Warner Music Group[12], Gruss Asset Management and at Bear Stearns & Co.[13]. Gruss also spent six years in the US Coast Guard[14].
Career
In 2011[15] Gruss established Round Hill Music as the first private equity fund[16] helping bring capital to artists such as The Beatles[17][18] and The Offspring.
Gruss also helped acquire the publisher Carlin[19] and the rights to over 150,000[20] songs recorded by the likes of The Goo Goo Dolls[21], The Rolling Stones, Frank Sinatra, Bruno Mars, Tim McGraw, Black Sabbath, Daughtry (band), Craig David, The Cult[22], Kiss, Limp Bizkit, Blues Traveler, Bruno Mars and Skid Row[23]
The Wall Street Journal stated on Nov. 19th, 2020 that Gruss's New York-based firm closed its third and largest fund to date, Round Hill Music Royalty Fund III LP and invested about $200 million of the new fund.[24]
Gruss helped Round Hill Music establish a rock label called Black Hill Records[25] in 2020, signing Austin-based duo Black Pistol Fire, Nashville-based blues and rock guitarist Jared James Nichols and British rock band The Cult[26]
In 2021 Gruss created a Round Hill Music Endowed Scholarship Fund of 1 million dollars to aid multiple students at Berklee College of Music on an annual basis with financial assistance in pursuing Music Business and Management degrees[27]
On Jan 28th, 2021 Josh Gruss[28] was included in Billboard (magazine)'s Change Agents: Leaders Stepping Up In A Year of Turmoil, as he was responsible for helping raise nearly $600 million for acquisitions, including $328 million with a public listing on the London Stock Exchange[29]
In 2021, Gruss helped acquire the Swedish label Telegram Studios, who's master recordings and catalog include Estelle, System of a Down’s Serj Tankian, Throwing Muses, Ziggy Marley, and Surfer Blood[30].
Executive Producer
Gruss was the Reissue Executive Producer on 4 of Bush (British band) release's The Science of Things, Deconstructed, Razorblade Suitcase and Sixteen Stone[31]. He was also the executive producer of the album “Travelers Blues” by Blues Traveler[32][33] which got nominated for Best Traditional Blues Album for the 2022 Grammy Awards.[34]
Quad Studios
In 2014 Gruss and songwriter Marti Frederiksen acquired and restored Quad Studios Nashville[35].
Rubikon
Gruss has extensively toured with his band Rubikon[36] and opened up for Buckcherry[37], Disturbed[38], Black Label Society, Sevendust, Shinedown, Nonpoint, The Cult[39], Tesla (band), Pop Evil, and Candlebox[40]. Rubikon’s song "Blood on My Hands" also peaked at #37 on the Main Stream Rock chart on Billboard in 2019.[41]
