Josh Hager (born 1970/1971) is musician and music producer, who has been working with Devo in both capacities since at least 2010.

Personal life[edit]

Josh Hager was born to a Catholic mother and Jewish father[1] in 1970 or 1971. He grew up on Long Island, and moved to Boston in the early 1980s.[2] Hager described his sense of subversive humor as heavily inspired by fellow Jewish creators like Woody Allen and Andy Kaufman, and it would later be instrumental in his performance career.[1]

Career[edit]

Hager led the Elevator Drops, a controversial Boston band in the 1990s. He also played with The Rentals[2] after joining the band in 1999.[1] Hager is also a music producer. He worked with Devo in co-producing their 2010 album, Something for Everybody.[3]

He later became friends with fellow Bostonian Tom Chapman.[2] In 2013, they formed a new band, variously reported as being named ShadowParty[1] or Stars of Suburbia. With Devo drummer Jeff Friedl and New Order guitarist Phil Cunningham,[2] they released their first album (ShadowParty) through Mute Records.[1]

After the 2014 death of Bob Casale, Hager took over as guitarist–keyboardist for the band.[2] Within the band, just as Casale was known as Bob 2 to differentiate him from fellow band member Bob Mothersbaugh, Hager is known as Josh 2 to distinguish him from drummer Josh Freese.[1]
