Joshua Michael McConkey
Joshua Michael McConkey (born 18 September 1977), also known as Josh McConkey, is an American politician, author, actor, and emergency physician. In 2024, he came to public view for winning the North Carolina Educational Lottery while running for Congress from the 13th district seat of North Carolina.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
Early life and education[edit]
McConkey, in 1999, graduated from Chadron State College with a Bachelor of Science in biology. In 2003, he graduated with Doctor of Medicine from the University of Nebraska. By 2006, he completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio.[7]
McConkey graduated from Air Command & Staff College, Air War College, and National Security Course at National Defense University.[4]
Career[edit]
In 2000, McConkey joined the Nebraska Army National Guard as a Medical Service Corps officer. In 2007, he was deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was awarded the Air Medal and Army Commendation Medal for his service there.[4][7][8]
In 2011, McConkey transferred to the U.S. Air Force Reserve and completed the USAF Aerospace Medicine Course. In 2019, he was promoted to Colonel and served as a flight surgeon and Critical Care Air Transport physician, also serving for a time as Chief of Medical Staff at the 916th Aerospace Medicine Squadron.[4][7][8]
Personal life[edit]
McConkey resides in Apex, North Carolina, with his wife, Elsa, and their three children.[7]
