Joshua Oduyemi (born Seun Joshua Oduyemi 赛恩·约书亚·奥杜耶米; May 14, 1983) is a Nigerian-American venture capitalist, real estate developer, businessman, engineer, and biotech executive who founded Multicent, a U.S-based financial technology (fintech) neobank company. His contributions to the private equity and venture capital sectors have been recognized in both Africa and Silicon Valley, California.[1] He co-founded Sheatrust Capital (with Brian Benchmark), a California-based venture capital and private equity firm focused on early-and growth-stage investments in Fintech, biopharmaceuticals and enterprises software-enabled technology companies.[2]
Oduyemi is also the founder of AbbeGen, an early-stage biopharmaceutical company claiming to develop novel therapies for cancer and autoimmune diseases.
Early life and education
Oduyemi was born in Shomolu, Lagos, Nigeria. He attended Government College Ikorodu and Jibril Martins High School for his primary and secondary school education and studied mechanical engineering at Delta State University. In 2012, he was awarded a Netherlands Master Fellowship Programme (NUFFIC) scholarship to study coastal engineering and port development at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education in Delft, Netherlands He later pursued a graduate program at Stanford University.
Career
Oduyemi began his professional careers in 2005 in Lagos, Nigeria, working in the banking sector. He later moved into the oil & gas industry, starting at Halliburton before taking on a role as an assistance vice president (AVP) at Schlumberger.[2] In the following years, he worked in various roles across the medical device and pharmaceutical sectors, including positions at Medtronic, Parexel, PPD, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Kyverna Therapeutics and Philips Healthcare. He has also provided consulting services to multinational investment banks focusing on risk management and technology.
In 2012, Oduyemi co-founded Sheatrust Capital, a California-based private equity firm focused on investing in early- and growth-stage investments.[3] [4] The firm later expanded its operations to Africa and Europe, supporting ventures in healthcare, enterprises software-enabled technology companies.[3]
Multicent (Fintech)
Oduyemi's background in banking and foreign exchange trading let to him to founding Multicent in 2020.[5]
The idea for the company came when while Oduyemi was travelling from Lagos, Nigeria, to Silicon Valley, California, where he encountered steep transaction and foreign exchange fees imposed by traditional banks on consumers and small businesses. His initial concept was a multi-currency payment solution designed to streamline cross-border spending, remittances, and payment processing.
The platform launched with features that allowed users to hold multi-currency accounts, send peer-to-peer payments, convert currencies, and transfer money to over 70 countries. Over time, Multicent expanded to support cryptocurrency exchange and stock trading, alongside digital payments tools for small businesses to accept digital payments globally.
In April 2022, the company release its first "super app" combining multiple financial services into one platform. That same year. report from FinTech Futures and FXDailyReport highlighted that Multicent platform had surpassed 350,000 users and had attracted over 10,000 small businesses to its payment services waitlist.[6]
AbbeGen-Advocacy for cancer innovation in North American & Africa
In October 2024, Oduyemi announced the launch of AbbeGen, an early-stage biopharmaceutical company based in San Carlos, California, focused on developing treatments for cancer and autoimmune diseases, with particular emphasis on improving access in Africa, North America, China and Nigeria.[7] Brian Warner was appointed CEO of the company. In an interview with Vanguard (Nigeria), Oduyemi discussed the need to expand access to advanced therapies such as CAR-T cell therapy and antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) in underserved country, emphasizing the importance of developing scalable and affordable healthcare solutions. Brian Warner also highlighted the potential of CAR-T, Antibody-Drug Conjugates (ADCs), and small molecules in improving treatment outcomes across Africa.[8]
Personal life
Oduyemi has supported philanthropic causes focused on education and healthcare and is a member of Rotary International.
