Jost is a Neu-Isenburg based automotive equipment company, founded in 1952 as a ball bearing turntable manufacturer by Hans Breuer and Joseph Steingass. Later by 1956 the company started production of tractor fifth wheels. The company expanded to Great Britain and South Africa in the 1960s as a specialist in fifth wheel and trailer landing gear..[1]. From 1970 to 80 the company started operations worldwide[2].
Jost have acquired three other brands, Rockinger[3], Tridec[4] and Quicke[5] which serve in different sectors and industry offering equipment for commercial vehicles and agriculture vehicles. The company today manufactures a huge number of products including fifth wheel couplings, king pins, landing gears, truck and trailer axles, ball bearing turntables, hook and ball towing hitches, Drawbars, towing eyes, trailer steering systems, axle suspensions, hydraulic cylinders, tipper equipment and container equipment[6].
Tridec[edit]
Founded in the 1990s as a steering and axle system company in the Netherlands to provide steering system and axle suspensions to trailer manufactures all over Europe and UK[7]. In very early years most of the trailer manufacturers adopted Tidecs system for their trailers, mainly the LV-O system which was designed specifically for double-decker trailers which increased the cargo space by mounting axles independently on the both sides[8]. In early 2000s the company advanced their LV-O system by reducing the suspension weight and narrowing the axles which in turn increased the payload capacity of the trailers, ultimately a win-win situation for the trailer manufacturers and the fleet operators[9].
In 2008 Jost acquired Tridec[10] and Mercedes-Benz Trailer Axles Systems in 2014 Today with manufacturing plants in Son and Cantanhede Jost is one of the largest axle system manufacturer[11]. Mercedes-Benz Trailer Axles Systems has been offering axles for trailers since 1996 all over Europe is a part of Jost axle system[12].
Rockinger[edit]
Founded in 1875 by Johann Rockinger in West Germany specializes in manufacturing of tow hitches, drawbars and drawbar eyes. First fully automatic coupling for trailers was manufactured and patent by Johann Rockinger in 1927 later in 1973 coupling agriculture and forestry vehicles was introduced[13].
In 1980 the company came up with remote controlled trailer drawbar hitch, these were specially designed for 18 ton capacity dual axle trailers and 24 ton tri-axle trailers supported with suitable bolt on or welded drawbar eye[14]. Later in 2001 the Jost acquired the company and entered UK market with their new remote controlled 57.5 mm trailer coupling for local market need[15]. Today Heavy duty truck manufactures like Volvo[16], Mercedes-Benz[17], MAN[18] offer Rockinger couplings as an option for push and pull trailer configurations.
Quicke[edit]
In 1947 Karl-Ragnar Åström designed the first front loader while working at his farm in Brännland later in 1949 Karl-Ragnar Åström and Alf Löfgren started a small scale production with company named Alo the name was derived from first letter of their family name. In 1959 Quicke was developed the first front loader while the Sweden market was saturated with manufacturers Alo focused on exports and by 1960 export sales surpassed the domestic sales.
In 1980 Alo signed an OEM agreement with Valtra for their Valmet Tractors and became a regular OEM supplier for the company. Argoma SA a frace based srapying equipment manufacturer was acquired by Alo due to its agricultural based manufacturing which cloud benefit Alo. Balticgruppen property management company based in Umeå acquired Alo in 1993 under the ownership of Balticgruppen Alo acquired Veto (DK) and Trima both loader manufacturer and also signed OEM deal with Massey Ferguson.
In 2002 3i a venture capital firm based in London acquired Alo under which Alo acquired American Bush Hog manufacturer and also signed OEM agreement with Case New Holland later in 2011 Alo was sold to Altor another Sweden based venture capital firm under its ownership Alo acquired Vreten (SE)[19]. Today Alo is under the wing of Jost since 2020 manufacturing and distributing loaders and farm equipment implements all over the world under the brand Quicke[20]
