Born in New Delhi in 1965, Kumar immigrated to Miami as a young man and began working at a used car lot.[2] After spotting a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing at a classic-car retailer, Kumar was inspired to work toward dealing in collectible automobiles. He moved to New York and founded Gullwing Motor Cars in Great Neck in 1988.[3]

Since relocating to Astoria in 1991, Gullwing Motor Cars has sold over 5,000 classic cars, and buys 500–700 automobiles annually.[4] Gullwing Motor Cars deals in all types of classic cars, but has become well known for its barn find offerings. In 2015, Kumar uncovered a significant 1953 Bentley R Type Continental that James Bond author Ian Fleming had gifted to Ivar Bryce; the car had sat untouched in a Hancock Park, Los Angeles garage for 30 years.[5] [6] In 2015, Gullwing Motor Cars purchased a 1958 Aston Martin DB Mark III in Cumberland Furnace, Tennessee that had been partially disassembled in storage for 30 years.[7]
