Journxl (stylised as JOURNXL; born Kayden James Buchanan on December 24, 2003) is a Canadian music producer, recording artist, filmmaker, and creative director. He is best known for his cinematic lo-fi and instrumental hip-hop productions released through his independent label ICEYGEN Records. His work merges analog warmth, jazz instrumentation, and ambient sound design, often accompanied by short films and visuals he directs himself.

Early life and education

Kayden James Buchanan was born on December 24, 2003, in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. He developed an early interest in music production and filmmaking, experimenting with audio and video editing software during his teenage years. While studying film and media production, Buchanan began releasing self-produced singles under his birth name before transitioning to his alias *Journxl*.

Career

2017–2022: Early releases as Kayden James Buchanan

Buchanan began releasing music independently in 2017. Early singles such as *Clash My Clan* and *Trap Dance* introduced his trap-inspired production style. His later works—including *Rainy Days Vol. 1* and *Coffee Days Vol. 1* (2020)—shifted toward lo-fi instrumentals. In 2020 he released *Captivity (EP)*, blending cinematic synth layers with ambient percussion. Further singles like *Let’s Get It*, *Speed Trance* (featuring Twigsy), *Fanatic*, and *Caffeinated (Remix)* refined his sound. *Canadian* (2022) marked his final release under his given name before adopting the *Journxl* identity.

2023–present: Re-branding as Journxl and ICEYGEN Records era

Buchanan reintroduced himself as *Journxl* in 2023, launching a string of instrumental lo-fi releases through his label ICEYGEN Records. Collaborating with VYNX, TRVLLR, and Jaylin Lee, he established a recognizable cinematic lo-fi sound built around textured keys and atmospheric sampling. Notable releases include *Forgotten Song* (with VYNX), *Frost on the Keys* (with TRVLLR), *Seasons*, *Overthink*, *Early Morning*, *Ocean Sun*, *Candy Colored Clouds*, and *Turning Leaves* (with TRVLLR). His 2024 EP *Arcade* showcased his integration of jazz and film-score elements, reinforcing his dual identity as both musician and visual director.

Musical style and influences

Journxl’s sound is rooted in lo-fi hip hop but extends to jazz, chillhop, and ambient. He cites influences such as Nujabes, J Dilla, Tom Misch, Kaytranada, and Bonobo. His production emphasizes mood and space over complexity, incorporating piano progressions, vinyl crackle, and cinematic transitions that mirror his work in filmmaking.

ICEYGEN Records

Founded in 2020 by Buchanan, ICEYGEN Records functions as both a record label and a creative collective. The imprint focuses on indie lo-fi, experimental, and alternative artists. Buchanan serves as founder, executive producer, and creative director—overseeing audio production, design, and short-form video content. ICEYGEN has released music by artists including VYNX, TRVLLR, Jaylin Lee (JayMarley), and Adam Lake.

Film and media work

Operating under his production studio *Kayden James Media*, Buchanan directs and edits short films, music videos, and AI-enhanced visuals for both his own work and ICEYGEN’s artists. His filmmaking style emphasizes minimalism, urban tone, and narrative pacing aligned with the rhythm of his music.
