Jovita Veronica Alvares is an award-winning Goan artist from Karachi, Pakistan who specializes in art and architecture.[1]

Early life[edit]

She began drawing in school at the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Karachi. She completed her O-levels from the Convent, where she took Art and got an A in her O-level examinations. She went on to A-levels at The Lyceum School in Karachi. When she was younger she mostly did sketches until she learnt more about art at school. In her second year of A-levels along with art, she studied economics and psychology.

Art[edit]

Alvares went on to the Indus Valley School of Art & Architecture from where she graduated with distinction in 2016. She was also awarded the Abu Shamim Areff award by the university.[2] In 2017, Alvares won the Imran Mir Art Prize.[3] The prize ceremony was held on 23 January 2017 at the studio/gallery home of the late artist.

Alvares used to walk around in her area Karachi Cantonment using a video camera to record her subjects. Later she began using a bike to get around. She lived in that area all her life and wanted to explore it. Later she chose to use stills rather than video footage for inspiration.[3]

Her portraits of Madam Noor Jehan and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan were on display at the Canvas Gallery in May 2016. She "chose the frames first and then worked with paint sand acrylic for these portraits".[1][4]
