Joy Drescher (15 November 1944 - 28 November 2021) was Mayor of Beaudesert from 1997-2000 and 2004-2008 in Queensland, Australia. She was the only woman to have held the position. In addition to serving two terms as mayor, she served three terms as councillor of the former Beaudesert Shire Council.

Mrs Drescher was also the last mayor of the Shire of Beaudesert before it was abolished under the Local Government (Reform Implementation) Act 2007 passed by the Parliament of Queensland on 10 August 2007. The shire was effectively split in two from 15 March 2008, with the northern area became part of Logan City, while the southern rural section became part of the Scenic Rim Region alongside the Shire of Boonah.

Personal life[edit]

Mrs Drescher (née Stapleton) was born at Cunnamulla in western Queensland. With eight sisters and two brothers, she was the second of 11 children to Alan and Blanche Stapleton.

Joy spent her childhood on sheep stations before attending Soubirous College at Scarborough, which later became part of the Southern Cross Catholic College founded in 1995 following the amalgamation of the Catholic primary and secondary schools on the Redcliffe Peninsula.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2019, Joy died at home in Beaudesert on 28 November 2021. Even after her cancer diagnosis, she continued her active participation in groups such as the Beaudesert Rotary Club, BADCAP (Beaudesert and District Community Arts Project Association), Powertalk Australia and the Beaudesert Bush Bards. She is survived by her husband Doug and four children.[1][2][3]

Career[edit]

Ms Drescher won her first election as councillor for Beaudesert Shire Council in 1979.

Over the next three decades, she spent three terms as councillor and two terms as mayor (1997-2000 and 2004-2008), having the distinction of being both the first female mayor of Beaudesert and the last mayor of the shire before it was abolished and the town became the administrative centre of Scenic Rim Regional Council.

She featured in an episode of Big Stories Small Towns called I got to be mayor, I could go back tomorrow.[4]
