Joy Iganya Agene
Joy Iganya Agene is a Nigerian environmental specialist who currently serves as Task Team Leader[1] for several large programs in the Nigerian portfolio[2][3] and has previously held similar roles in other programs.[4]
Education
Agene obtained a Bachelor of Science in Geology from the University of Jos, a Master of Science in Environmental Management from Coventry University, United Kingdom, and a PhD in Environmental Geology from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi. She also attended Harvard Kennedy School where she completed the Leadership, Organization and Action Program. She has authored books on geospatial technology and environmental science with numerous publications in reputable academic journals.[5]
Career
Agene is a Senior Environmental Specialist at the World Bank,[6] where she supports environmental and climate-related lending operations in Nigeria, India, Malawi, and Kenya. She is currently the Task Team Leader[7] for the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) in Nigeria.[8][9][10]
She previously worked at the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA). She served as Coordinator of the China Trust Fund, facilitating South–South knowledge exchange between China, India, and Nigeria on watershed management, climate-smart agriculture, surface water runoff management, and geospatial technologies.[4] She also coordinated Nigeria's first international geospatial knowledge conference and supported a bilateral geospatial cooperation agreement between Nigeria and India.[11]
Agene has worked with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Italy as Technical Adviser on Global Forest Resources Assessment in West Africa.[12]
In the private sector, she specializes in GIS for international oil and gas companies and supports environmental operations for public and private institutions in Nigeria. She has received recognition in Nigeria for her contributions to rural development and humanitarian work.[13][14]
