Jugaad Motion Pictures
Jugaad Motion Pictures[edit]
Jugaad Motion Pictures is a media and production company that was founded in 2016 by producer Dheer Momaya and writer/director Dar Gai. They specialize in the development and production of Feature Films, Music Videos, Television Commercials, and Drama Series. Their offices are based out of Mumbai, India.
Overview[edit]
The production house’s name is derived from the Hindi slang for hustling and finding innovative “hacks” to solve problems. They’ve produced two indie feature films. Their first film was the critically acclaimed “Teen Aur Aadha”/”Three and a Half”, which was presented by noted filmmaker Anurag Kashyap and written/directed by Dar Gai. It won over 20 International Film Awards and has traveled to more than 45 film festivals across the world. It now streams globally on Netflix. It stars Jim Sarbh, Zoya Hussain, Anjum Rajabali, Suhasini Mulay, M.K. Raina, etc.
Anurag Kashyap first noticed Zoya Hussain in Three and a half, which led him to cast her as a lead actress in his film Mukkabaz. It also marks the debut of Aarya Dave, who then later features in Gai’s second film. Interestingly, the film is shot entirely in 3 long takes, with each takes capturing different stories and characters, inhabiting the same space over different times.
Their second feature film “Namdev Bhau in Search of Silence”, also directed by Dar Gai and produced by Dheer Momaya had its world premiere at Busan International film festival, and was screened at numerous prestigious film festivals like BFI’s London Film Festival, Palm Springs International Film Festival, Goteborg, IFFI Goa, MAMI, etc where it received a lot of praise, especially for the acting performance of the lead actor Namdev Gurav, who was not a professional actor, but has been Dheer Momaya’s driver since many years. In 2019, the film gained popularity within the Indian film industry when the actor got nominated for Best Actor at the Melbourne Indian Film festival alongside noted actors Amitabh Bacchan, Vicky Kaushal, Ayushman Khurana, Manoj Bajpai, and Vijay Sethupathi. It won the award for Best Feature Film at Dhaka International Film Festival. It was also an opening film at the Dharamshala Film Festival and Indian Film Festival of Stuttgart.
In 2019, Dheer Momaya was the only producer from India selected for the 11th edition of the Trans Atlantic Partners program. Dheer and Daria were selected for Berlinale Talents 2019 and their project ‘In-Laws’ was selected at the prestigious Talent Co-Production Market at Berlinale.
In the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, Pranit Sahni from Jugaad was invited by the Indian Government to be a part of a panel discussion at Cannes for merging Indian co-productions with those of other countries.
Jugaad Motion Pictures regularly produces music videos that have previously garnered millions of views on YouTube. Their video for Cold/Mess by Prateek Kuhad was deemed “The Best Music Video of the Year” by Rolling Stone and won a Radio City Freedom Award for Best Video. It’s been widely commended for its hyperrealistic cinematic approach. Their video “Sage” for the Indian music artist Ritviz crossed over 3 million views within the course of a week. Simultaneously, they also produce commercials, documentaries, and short films.
