Julie Brown (born 1962) is the CFO of Smith & Nephew plc, a global medical technology business headquartered in the UK. Julie joined the board as Chief Financial Officer in February 2013.

Career[edit]

After graduating with first class honours from the University of Warwick in 1983, Brown joined KPMG where she trained as a Chartered Accountant. She qualified as an ACA in 1986 and also became a Fellow of the Institute of Taxation in 1987. After qualifying, Brown spent twenty-five years at Astra Zeneca plc (and its predecessor companies ICI and Zeneca). She served as Vice President Finance & Strategy, Operations and ultimately as Interim Group Chief Financial Officer (2012-2013). She undertook Commercial and Strategic roles and was Regional Vice President Latin America, Marketing Company President AstraZeneca Portugal and Vice President Corporate Strategy and R&D Chief Financial Officer.[1][2] She has led multi-billion dollar cost saving and restructuring programmes in addition to mergers and acquisitions.

Brown became CFO at Smith & Nephew in February 2013.[1][2] She laid out a capital allocation framework for the company; supported multiple M&A transactions; refinanced the company and led Group Optimisation and the Finance Transformation.[3][4]

Brown became a non-executive Director of Roche Holding Ltd in March 2016 and is Chair of the Audit Committee.[5][4]

In July 2016, it was announced that Brown will leave Smith & Nephew in January 2017 to join Burberry Group plc as Chief Operating and Chief Financial Officer.[6]

Personal life[edit]

Brown is married with two daughters. She also has a pilot's licence in hang-gliding.[2]
