Juliet Anne Wood (born 1939) is a British figurative painter known for her expressive portraiture that explores contemporary life and human interaction. Spanning five decades, she has painted hundreds of individuals and produced over 200 portraits. Her paintings, known for their psychological depth, colour and compositional strength, have been exhibited at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, the Bankside Gallery, and other venues, and her work has been held in public collections, including the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and private collections across the United Kingdom.[1][2]

Early life and education

Wood was born in London in 1939. She attended the Arts Educational Schools, where she received training in both the performing and visual arts, and later pursued formal art education at St Alban’s School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art, studying under William Coldstream and Maurice Feild.[3] Subsequently, she spent a postgraduate year in Italy, immersing herself in the study of Renaissance masters.

Career

Wood taught art at several institutions, including Marlborough College, Kingsbury Hill House School, Heriots Wood Grammar School for Girls, and 17 years at Swindon School of Art and Design. In 1977 she received her first portrait commission for the BBC Everyman documentary.[4] Other notable commissions include a portrait of mathematician Sir Michael Atiyah, held at the Royal Society of Edinburgh[5][6][7] with its study held in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery.[8]

Her exhibitions include Alone and Together, Brunel's People (Menier Gallery, 2013),[9] From the Slade: Through Time (Oxford, 2016),[10] Music, Beaches, Family (White Horse Gallery, 2017),[11] and A Human Touch (Bankside Gallery, 2019).[12] In 2023 she held a joint exhibition with her husband, the late wood engraver Simon Brett, at the White Horse Gallery.[13]

Personal life

Wood was born to cardiologist Paul Wood and his wife Elizabeth (née Guthrie). She settled in Marlborough, Wiltshire. In the early 1970s, while teaching at Marlborough College, she met the wood engraver Simon Brett. They married in 1974, had one daughter and remained together for more than fifty years until his death in December 2024.[14] [15] Wood also has four children from her earlier marriage to the artist Richard Shirley Smith.
