Early life[edit]

Julio Santana was born into a life of poverty, living with his parents in a hut located in a village deep in Amazon rainforest. He grew up as a ______________.[1]

Life as a hitman[edit]

Julio Santana first began his career as a hitman in 1971 at the age of 17. His first execution was that of Antonio Martins, a local fisherman who had allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl in a nearby village. While the hit had originally been given to Santana's uncle by the girl's father, his uncle had persuaded the teenage Julio to carry out the deed saying that "God would look the other way". He is said to have accepted the task in order to put food on the table for his impoverished family.[2]

Working for the government[edit]

Santana was later employed as an assassin for the then Brazilian military government from 1967 to 1974 in the struggle against communist insurgents in the Araguaia River basin. He had been "offered up" by his uncle to the Brazilian government as an asset to fight against the opposing Communist Party of Brazil that was attempting to establish a so-called revolutionary base area in order to wage a protracted people's war against the Brazilian government.

Following the transition of Brazil from a military dictatorship to civilian rule in 1985, Julio Santana continued his life as an assassin, now working as a freelance contract killer for various employers. Whenever he was hired, he would write down in a notebook the name of the victim and the client, as well as the payment amount and the location in which the killing took place.[3]
