Julius Ehrentraut (born April 3, 1841 in Frankfurt (Oder), died March 25, 1923 in Berlin) was a German painter.[1]

Life[edit]

As the son of a lithographer, Julius Ehrentraut also became a lithographer, but also studied at the Berlin Art Academy, which he entered in 1861, and where he finally enjoyed the lessons of Professor Schruder.

Due to the bad family circumstances, he devoted himself to lithography again with Q. Becker [de] (animal and genre painter, born 1830), under whose guidance he made some costume figures (peasant costumes). Since these figures found buyers, he founded his own studio and, following on from his role model, Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier, began to paint soldiers from the 17th century.

Slowly he continued his education through diligent study of the Dutch masters. He quickly succeeded in reaching his role model with a sharp, characteristic conception, confident drawing and subtle brushwork, so that he became one of the best small painters of the Berlin school during his lifetime.

His main images are:

  • The sick fool
  • Reveille, the fool in prison
  • The Swedish parliamentarian
  • The strategists
  • Musical entertainment ( Staatsgalerie Stuttgart )
  • The youngest comrade
  • Edifying (1885)

In 1878, Ehrentraut was appointed teacher at the Berlin Art Academy.

Ehrentraut was buried in the Friedhof Wilmersdorf in Berlin.
