Julius Zoltan Nadas (born October 1, 1945) is a Hungarian-American software developer and Professor of Mathematics.[1]
Julius Nadas is an ethnic Hungarian born in a displaced person camp near Ried, Österreich. He was the first of three children to be born to Magyar refugees who had escaped from Budapest only days before it was attacked by the Russian Army at the end of the second world war. His family came to the United States on the transport ship USS General Harry Taylor sponsored by the Church of the Brethren. They moved to Cleveland, Ohio, when he was six years old and he lived there until he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics from Case Institute of Technology. Case was a very exciting environment which produced many computer science pioneers during those years like Don Knuth and John Walker (programmer). From there he went to University of Wisconsin–Madison for a Master's degree in Mathematics. After that he joined Sperry UNIVAC as a part of the 1100 software development team in Roseville, Minnesota and then transferred into the Central Region Marketing organization where he installed computers at schools like Michigan Technological University and Illinois Institute of Technology. While at UNIVAC he worked with Grace Murray Hopper among others.
He started working at Wilbur Wright College of the City Colleges of Chicago in the Fall semester of 1976 in what was then called the Data Processing Department. The name of the department was later changed, first to Information Technology and subsequently to Computer Information Systems. He served as chair of the department from 1993 thru 2006 at which time he transferred into the Mathematics Department. He has also taught Computer Forensics in the Social Science Department and numerical methods in the Engineering Department. For a short time he also served as the Wright College webmaster. During his tenure at Wright he served on many college and district committees and was elected president of the Wright College Faculty Council. He has been called the "The Magyar Mayor of Wright[2]" Among the many awards he has received he is particularly proud of the Wright College Distinguished Service, the PTK Golden Apple and the SGA Advisor of the Year awards.
He has four children and eight grandchildren. He has been active in the Chicago Hungarian Community[3] as well as the Hungarian Scouts Association.[4] In 2012 he worked as an IT support volunteer in the Obama Campaign, and in 2014 joined the Basic Income Earth network.[5]
He tries to share his technological skills with others by creating tools like the Wright College Calculator.[6]
