On 4 June, 2021, ISIS operatives ambushed forces of the Syrian Army and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps in the Al-Sukhnah Desert, on the Palmyra-Deir ez-Zor highway. Leaving at least 23 Syrian Army and Iranian personnel dead, including several senior ranking Generals.[2] The Iranian personnel killed in the attack were there as advisors to the Syrian Army. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 3 ISIS operatives were also killed in the ambush [3] and several Russian airstrikes were carried out in the Syrian desert in response to the attack.[4]
