Junhel Dalanon is an associate professor of the School of Dentistry at Southwestern University PHINMA (Philippines),[1] former president of the Philippine Dental Association Cebu Chapter,[2] and a Ph.D. student at the Department of Stomatognathic Function and Occlusal Reconstruction in Tokushima University (Japan).[3] He is notable for chronicling the evolution of dental education and dentistry in the Philippines.[4][5]

Early life[edit]

Dalanon was born on 1981 in Cebu City to Capt. Benjamin Dalanon Jr., a retired master mariner, and Mrs. Angelina Dalanon, a retired teacher. He is the eldest among four siblings. He spent his preschool days at the Sacred Heart School for Boys, elementary at the University of San Carlos Boys School, and was a scholar at the Cebu City National Science High School.

He finished his dental degree in 2005 at the Southwestern University PHINMA. After passing the Professional Regulation Commission's licensure examination for dentists, he studied Nursing for Health Allied Professions for a year at the Cebu Normal University while undergoing a postgraduate training in orthodontics and temporomandibular joint dysfunction management at the Center for Advance Dental Studies in Quezon City, Philippines. He then took up and finished a certificate course in Professional Education in 2008, Diploma in Special Education in 2009, Master of Arts in Teaching Special Education in 2010, and Doctor of Education in Educational Management in 2014.

Academic and professional career[edit]

In 2014 he was invited by the dean of the school of dentistry and the chief of clinics of Southwestern University PHINMA to join the faculty. As a specialist in special needs dentistry, he frequently lectures for the Philippine Dental Association Cebu Chapter and the Department of Health Regional Office VII (DOH RO VII) for the Public Health Dentists of Bohol, Cebu, Negros Oriental and Siquijor. One of these lectures was during the 1st Public Health Dental Congress in Central Visayas on June 14 and 15, 2016 at Sarrosa International Hotel and Residential Suites, Kasambagan, Cebu City.[6]

In 2016 he became the youngest president of the Philippine Dental Association Cebu Chapter and subsequently the youngest to receive a national award as one of only 10, Philippine Dental Association's most outstanding chapter presidents. Together with then president of the National Association of Dental Traders, Inc., Mrs. Lourdes Villaroman, they organized the 1st Philipine Dental Exposition on July 28–29, 2016.[7] During his term of office, he has been a frequent source of information regarding dental health in various radio and television programs like ABS-CBN's TV Patrol and DYAB Cebu.[8]
