The Royal Air Force Dental Branch is the dental formation of the RAF. Defence Dental Services (DDS) has its former infrastructure. It has also been referred to as RAF Dental Services.
History[edit]
It was formed in July 1930. In 1943 training was set up at the former RAF Sidmouth.
The Defence Dental Agency was formed in Buckinghamshire in March 1996.
Directorship[edit]
From 1953, the Director would have to be an air vice-marshal, not an air commodore as previously, to bring the RAF structural leadership into line of rear admiral and major-general for the dental directorships of other forces.[1]
The following have served as Director:
- AVM Roy Scoggins CB OBE, 1958 (died on 19 January 1970 aged 61)[2]
- AVM H. Keggan, 4 May 1964[3]
- AVM John Jones 1982 (became the Director of DDS until December 1987)
Former RAF dentists[edit]
- Kenneth Swiss (served from 1934-45), Chairman from 1975-81 of the British Dental Association (BDA)[4]
Structure[edit]
It has always been headquartered in Buckinghamshire, in the same building where Defence Dental Services is situated.
Training[edit]
Dental officers are university-qualified dentists, who then complete eight weeks of RAF officer training in Lincolnshire.
The Dental Training Establishment in Buckinghamshire became the RAF Institute of Dental Health and Training in the early 1970s.
