Justin Hughes (born 1967) is an English author, business consultant, speaker and expert on the subjects of leadership, high performance and risk.

The Business of Excellence[edit]
Justin is the author of the The Business of Excellence (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2016).[1] The work explores the challenges of high performance and leadership and provides insights, interviews and case studies from the military, sporting and corporate worlds. The author advocates the use of these methods which can be applied by the reader in their own teams and organizations. A review by Professor Costas Markides, Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at the London Business School stated that the work ‘deserves to become the execution manual for any team or organization that aims to achieve operational excellence.
Current career[edit]
Justin is the Managing Director of Mission Excellence, a consultancy that partners with organizations committed to high performance.[2] He built the business from a zero base. It now delivers consulting and training services around the world to organizations across the spectrum of commercial, public sector, not-for-profit and professional sport.
Subject Matter Expert and Author[edit]
Justin has authored case studies and white papers on the subjects of leadership and teamwork.[3] He is the author of Mission Excellence’s leadership and teambuilding blog and regularly contributes to the publication HRzone.com.,[4][5] Justin was also quoted in the book Legacy by James Kerr (Constable, 2013) which explores high performance and focuses on the New Zealand ‘All Blacks’ rugby team. Justin has featured in the media providing commentary on leadership issues. Appearances include:

Justin is a speaker on high performance, decision-making, risk and safety culture, and leadership. In addition to many private client engagements, he has presented at a number of national and international events which include:
- The Institute of Directors’ Annual Convention, Europe’s biggest gathering of business leaders, alongside Michael O’Leary and Gordon Brown (2004) [7]
- ‘Leaders in Dubai’, the Middle East’s premier leadership forum, alongside Kofi Annan and Sir Richard Branson (2007) [8]
- International Association of Drilling Contractors risk and safety presentations in Europe, Middle and Far East.
Informative Years[edit]
Royal Air Force[edit]
Justin joined the Royal Air Force in 1990 where he trained to become a military fighter pilot before going on to fly the Tornado F3. He was the top cadet in officer training and was awarded the Wilkinson Sword for outstanding leadership. His training and operational deployments as a fighter pilot include UN peacekeeping operations in Bosnia.
Red Arrows[edit]
Justin flew as a Red Arrows for 2000-2002,[9] with whom he flew over 250 displays, including 3 international tours. He was promoted to Executive Officer and was responsible for operational day-to-day management of the team which consisted of a hand-picked group of 9 elite pilots and 90 support personnel.[10]

Justin’s experience in military and business has given him the insights to create a proprietary performance model that can be applied to a wide spectrum of organizations. Key attributes of the model include:
- People: the primacy of attitude over skills.
- Capability: building alignment before setting people free.
- Delivery: a process to close the gap between desired and actual outcomes.
- Learning: how to accelerate performance in real time.
Education[edit]
Justin has an MBA with Distinction from London Business School and a BSc (Hons) in physics from the University of Bristol.
