Justin McAleese (born April 6, 1985) is an Irish marriage equality campaigner.[1][2][3] and current Constituency Representative for Fianna Fáil in Dublin Rathdown. He is the only son of Mary McAleese and Martin McAleese.[4][5]

Born in Newry, Co. Down, McAleese attended The King’s Hospital School, Dublin[6] and graduated from UCD in 2007. After graduating, he trained as a chartered accountant with PricewaterhouseCoopers and worked at Ryanair as assistant to Michael O’Leary and as Head of Investor Relations[7]. He gained a high public profile in April 2015 when he wrote publicly about growing up gay in Ireland.[8][9][10].[11][12][13]. McAleese served as joint-constituency co-ordinator of the Yes Equality campaign in Dublin South East which returned the highest yes vote in Ireland at 75%.[14] McAleese criticised members of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary for their effort in the marriage referendum.[15]

In March 2018, he was appointed Constituency Rep for Fianna Fáil for Dublin Rathdown and intends to seek the party’s nomination to contest the next Irish general election[16][17]. McAleese is a roman catholic and in August 2015 he publicly asked the Irish hierarchy how they intend to show respect to the LGBTI community[18][19]. In March 2018, McAleese said it was ironic that the Vatican silenced and banned his mother, herself a product of the Catholic education system, from speaking in the Vatican on a conference about women in the church on International Women's day.[20][21] McAleese is in favour of repealing the 8th amendment to the Irish constitution.[22]

McAleese is a council member of the President's Award Gaisce (a voluntary and non-remunerated role)[23] and is an alumnus of the Washington Ireland Programme[24]

McAleese married Dr. Fionán Donohoe, an obstetrician and gynaecologist, in Wicklow in May 2017[25]
