Jye Currie (born 21 September 1993) is an Australian film director. Currie made his feature film debut with Beat (2022).

Early life[edit]

Currie was born in Newcastle, New South Wales, to Kelly and David Currie and has one younger sister. Currie is an Aboriginal Australian man who from a young age discovered a love for life. Currie's parents showed him what hard-work, passion & love looked like. He grew up playing sports, competing in ammeter boxing for multiple years, winning himself the NSW championship title. He soon replaced his time in the ring with travelling overseas. Currie is known for his extensive travels around the globe documenting different cultures, simply with a camera in his hand.[1]

Career[edit]

After graduating in 2020 from the University of Newcastle Currie earned a Bachelor Degree in Communication majoring in Media Production followed by an Honours Degree in Communication majoring in Film. After this Currie then embarked on another long trip, traveling around the world to find stories of truth. Soon after Currie returned home with a burning desire, It was then he founded the production company of Green Frog Productions with the mission of telling stories to entertain and inspire humans, around the world.[2] In 2019, Currie directed the short film Victim which won a 11 international awards. These awards created the momentum for Currie to pursue his passion and undertake his first feature film which he began writing the original screenplay in 2021. Making his directorial debut, Currie brought Beat to the world. Independently producing the feature film in his hometown of Newcastle, Australia.[3]

Currie's debut feature film, Beat (2022), is psychological thriller that explores the themes of homelessness and mental health with the story driven by classical music. The film stars the likes of Alexandra Jensen, Rachael Carpani, Alexis Lane, John Wood, Sebastian Szeszeran and Ben Hall. It has set records in Newcastle, Australia for the largest independent film to be produced in the region.
