Jyothikumar Chamakkala is an Indian politician, belonging to the Indian National Congress and is currently the General Secretary of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).[1][2]. He is the former State General Secretary of Indian Youth Congress (Kerala), and has previously served as a Syndicate member of the Kerala University[3].

Personal Life[edit]

Jyothikumar Chamakkala was born on 3rd May 1972, to Smt Saraswatiyamma and Shri G BhaskaraKurup in the small town of Anchal, Kollam[4]. He is married to Gayathri Nair G and have two daughters[5]

Political Career[edit]

Jyothikumar Chamakkala started his political life from his early school days. In 1981, he joined Kerala Students Union(KSU). Soon after his completion of college, Jyothikumar became the General Secretary of Congress Block Committee in Anchal from 2002. From 2004 to 2007, he served as the State General Secretary of Youth Congress..He was the General Secretary of DCC for Kollam District from 2007 to 2012[6]. From 2012 to 2020, he served as the Secretary of KPCC and subsequently became KPCC General Secretary from 2020[7][8]. During his tenure as KPCC secretary, he simultaneously served as a senate member of Kerala University from 2010 and later elected as a syndicate member of Kerala University from 2011 till 2018[9]. In 2012, he was elected as convenor of recreational committee for Kerala University Platinum – Jubilee Year and additionally served as the convener of Syndicate’s Finance Committee from 2011 to 2014[10]

Jyothikumar Chamakkala has been an active spokesman[11][12][13][14] for Congress Party in Kerala through the years and is acclaimed for his superior debating prowess. His on-the-point debate strategy has forced his counterparts to retreat on many occasions in the prime-time[15][16] channel debates.

Controversy[edit]

  • May 18, 2019: During a debate in Mathrubhumi News, a prominent Malayalam news channel, Jyothikumar Chamakkala criticised Narendra Modi citing anomalies on his educational qualifications which triggered a social media outrage[17]
  • May 6, 2015: Kerala University syndicate decided to withdraw the affiliation of the BEd College run by Chamakkala trust on the basis of a report submitted by pro-vice chancellor Veeramanikandan that the trust did not have the required extent of land when the university gave Bachelor of Education(BEd) affiliation in 2005[18][19]
