K-Box (Knowledge Box) is a Free and OpenSource web-based Document Management System. It offers support for common file types (pdf, doc, docx, gif, etc.) and for some GIS file formats (Shapefile, GeoTiff, gpx, GeoPackage, geojson) as well as mp4 video formats.

    History[edit]

K-Box has been developed since 2014 in the frame of the broader K-Link initiative in Central Asia (Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan)[2]. The objective of K-Link is to link existing knowledge platforms (websites, electronic libraries, etc.) into a thematic network, in order to make data and information more persistent, better inter-connected and more easily available. GIZ, the University of Central Asia, EcoMuseum in Karaganda or the Central Asian Regional Pasture Network[3][4] count among the first institutions to become part of the K-Link Asia network[5].

K-Box (called back then K-DMS[6]) has been developed as a spin-off of the overall K-Link initiative, to allow institutions and organizations without an own content and data management system to easily access a K-Link network, both to retrieve and to publish information.

K-Box and K-Link have been released under a GNU Affero General Public License version 3 in July 2017 and the source code has been transferred to GitHub, in order to facilitate their wider adoption and dissemination[7].

In 2017, another K-Link network, the Sustainable Land Management Network in Tajikistan, was created with the support of the World Bank ELMARL project, by providing 16 NGOs in Tajikistan with access to K-Boxes[8][9].

In October 2018, support for GIS data has been added to the K-Box and architectural changes have been made to fully comply with the General Data Protection Regulation[10]. Later this month, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has included K-Link and K-Box in its Toolkit - Digitalisation for Development Cooperation[11]
