KUNAI is a Metroidvania style video game. Players take the role of Tabby, a tablet who joins the fight against a robot uprising. Its worldwide release on Steam and the Nintendo Switch was on 06 February 2020. The game was launched worldwide on 06 February 2020, developed by TurtleBlaze and published by The Arcade Crew on Steam and the Nintendo Switch.
Gameplay
The player takes control of Tabby, a tablet-robot with a humanoid body to fight against multiple kinds of robots. His weapons are mainly his sword, shuriken, two machine-guns and a rocket-launcher. To move around the 2D world the player can, besides moving and jumping, use two Kunai to more effectively move around vertically. He can also dash to the left and right to phase through enemies and certain walls. When defeating enemies and looting chests hidden around the map he can gain the in-game currency referred to as "coin". This currency can be used to upgrade his weapons at certain WiFi spots placed throughout the world and to upgrade his sword at the blacksmith stationed at the main base. The player can also find a total of 16 heart-pieces which increase the player's life when he collects four.
Development
While the first public reveal was at the Gamescom in 2018, development started around November 2017. The game was programmed using the Unity engine.
Reception
The pre-release reception was overall very positive, with Kunai winning the "Best Of PAX WEST 2019" and the "Indie Megabooth selection of PAX EAST 2018".
The reception after the release was overall positive, with Metacritic giving the game a Metascore of 83/100, while the userscore was 8.0/10. GameSpot gave the game a 7/10 in its review.
