The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Patushay (Bandipora) (abbreviated as KVK Bandipora or KVK Patushay) is an agricultural extension and training center located in Bandipora district, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Established in 2005, it functions under the administrative control of the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-Kashmir) and forms part of the nationwide network of Krishi Vigyan Kendras coordinated by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).[2]
History
KVK Bandipora was sanctioned in 2005 as part of ICAR’s national program to establish one Krishi Vigyan Kendra in each district of India.[3] It was established in Patushay, Bandipora, to cater to the horticulture- and agriculture-based economy of the district, which is known for its apple orchards, walnut production, maize, and temperate vegetables. The center has since been a key nodal point for technology dissemination, farmer-scientist interaction, and rural capacity building in the district.[4]
Mandate and Functions
As per ICAR guidelines, the KVK Bandipora works under four mandated activities:[5]
- **Technology Assessment and Refinement** – testing new agricultural technologies and adapting them to local conditions.
- **Frontline Demonstrations (FLDs)** – showcasing improved crop varieties, animal husbandry practices, and allied technologies.
- **Capacity Building** – organizing short- and long-term training courses for farmers, farm women, and rural youth.
- **Knowledge and Resource Center** – serving as a hub for agricultural information dissemination in Bandipora district.
Major Initiatives
KVK Bandipora has introduced several projects to improve livelihoods in tribal and rural areas of the district. These include:
- **Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) Projects** – providing improved seed varieties, horticulture plants, and farm equipment to tribal farmers.[6]
- **Protected Cultivation** – promoting polyhouse and greenhouse vegetable cultivation to extend crop seasons.[7]
- **Mushroom Cultivation Training** – training farmers and self-help groups in mushroom production for income diversification.[8]
- **Women Empowerment Programs** – skill development training for rural women in food processing, kitchen gardening, and dairy management.[9]
Impact and Achievements
Over the years, KVK Bandipora has conducted hundreds of on-farm trials, demonstrations, and farmer awareness programs, directly benefiting thousands of farmers in the district.[10]
| Year | Activity | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Training on mushroom cultivation | Dozens of farmers adopted mushroom farming as an additional income source.[11] |
| 2024 | Awareness camps under TSP | Improved distribution of seeds, tools, and improved varieties among tribal farmers.[12] |
| 2023 | Polyhouse vegetable cultivation | Farmers reported 30–40% higher yields compared to open-field cultivation.[13] |
Collaborations
KVK Bandipora collaborates with multiple agencies and programs, including:
- **National Horticulture Mission (NHM)** for apple orchard rejuvenation.
- **Department of Agriculture Production & Farmers’ Welfare, J&K** for seed distribution.
- **ICAR-ATARI Zone I, Ludhiana** for training modules and monitoring.[14]
- **Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs)** for capacity-building programs in remote tribal areas.
