The Government Degree College Gurez is a public degree college located in the remote Gurez Valley of Bandipora district, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Established in October 2019 by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir, it is affiliated with the University of Kashmir.[3] The institution caters primarily to students from Dawar, Tulail Valley, and other high-altitude areas near the Line of Control.
History
The college was sanctioned in 2019 under the Jammu and Kashmir Higher Education Department’s policy to expand higher education in geographically isolated regions. It was formally inaugurated on 15 October 2019 by then-Lieutenant Governor G. C. Murmu.[4]
Initially, classes were conducted from the premises of the Government Higher Secondary School, Dawar, due to the absence of dedicated infrastructure.[5] In 2022, the Government of J&K approved funds for the construction of a permanent campus at Dawar, which includes academic blocks, a library, laboratories, and residential facilities for staff and students.[6]
Academics
The college offers undergraduate programs under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) prescribed by the University of Kashmir.[7]
Undergraduate Programs
- Bachelor of Arts (BA) – Subjects include History, Political Science, Economics, Kashmiri, Education, Environmental Science
- Bachelor of Science (BSc) – Specializations in Mathematics, Physics, Botany, Zoology
- Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) – Focus on Accounting, Business Statistics, and Financial management
Campus
The permanent campus is under construction near Dawar, Gurez, at an altitude of over 8,000 ft above sea level. The site faces challenges such as harsh winters and limited road connectivity via the Razdan Pass, which remains closed for several months due to snowfall.[8]
Facilities under development include:
- Science laboratories for BSc courses
- Central library with digital access
- Computer lab with internet connectivity (satellite-backed)
- Residential quarters for faculty
- Hostel accommodation for male and female students
Student life
The college organizes cultural programs, sports events, and debates in coordination with the Higher Education Department. Given the valley’s isolation, special focus is placed on co-curricular activities to promote student engagement.[9]
Significance
Gurez Degree College is considered a milestone in the educational development of the valley, which was previously dependent on distant colleges in Bandipora or Srinagar. The institution is expected to improve higher education enrolment rates among youth in the border region and contribute to socio-economic development.[10]
