K.D. Shybu Mundackal (born 1973) is a Malayalam language poet and lyricist from Kerala, India. An active poet of modern Malayalam poetry, he is also a known theater activist, noted animator and VFX director. He is the director of the famous animation VFX studio Vismayasmax Animations, Kerala chaired by legendary actor Mohanlal. His poetry works are frequently published in Malayalam language periodicals and his poetry books are published by leading publishers of Kerala. He is a graduate of the College of Fine Arts Trivandrum, with a gold medal.
Early life and education
He was born in a small village, adjacent to the Periyar river bed of Kerala. This place is famous as the motherland of Adi Shankara and apostle Thomas landed in Kerala in Muziris near here. In this land C.M.Moulavi, the contemporary prophet said aloud the thrilling legend of "Badr war" stories. He was born just before the dark age of Indian democracy, the state of Emergency. Although his childhood was entirely isolated, it was a bit spicy with political enthusiasm. He could read and meditate on the big old tomes of great personalities of global literature like Yasunari Kawabata, Ernest Hemingway, Vishnu Sakharam Khandekar, Kahlil Gibran, Victor Hugo, Masanobu Fukuoka from a small village library called Jaihind from a very young age.
His secondary education was from Vengola Shalom high school, Perumbavoor in 1988. After completing his pre-degree from Sree Sankara Vidyapeetom, he got primary classes on painting and art from Chitrapeedam Chithrakala Vidyalaya, Perumbavoor. He worked as an instructor in "Chitralayam Fine Arts Academy," a famous painting school in those days in Perumbavoor.
During the pre-degree years, he was greatly involved in the cultural and art activities in Perumbavoor. Later he created a theater group called "Purogamana Nataka Kala Sangham." Some of the plays played all over Kerala were Spartacus, Asthanaviddikal, Manthrikakkuppayam, Chandeeranum koottarum, Chunari etc. After a few years he formed a new theater group named 'Naandi'-Young Collective Experimental Theater Search in Rural Space and under this staged many plays like Moonnu Kallanmar, Thee, Manthu, Oru Perilla Natakam. He participated in many camps on performing arts and plays organized during those days by Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy, Yuva Kala Sahithi, Kerala State Yuvajana Kshema Board, Sri sankara Samskritha Sarvakalasala, Thanjavoor South Zone Cultural Center and Sopanam Theatre Research Centre. From those camps he could receive great practical classes from the stalwarts of art, theater and literature legends like Ammannur Madhava Chakyar, Kavalam Narayana Panicker, Prof K S Narayana Pillai, K. T. Muhammed, Ibrahim Vengara, C. L. Jose, Kaladi Gopi and from a lot of other masters.
During the 1990s, he was actively involved in the coordination team of the first State convention of Purogamana Kala Sahitya Sangham held at Perumbavoor, it was the major turning point of his creative life. He decided to do something serious in the field of art and literature. After that, in 1992, he got admission to one of the famous arts colleges in India, College of Fine Arts Trivandrum. After a four years long graduation study in art, he passed out from there with a gold medal and a first rank in the bachelor of fine arts in 1997.
Career
Just after graduation, he got special training in the medium of Animation from the legends like Ajith Rao, Derek Lamb, Jeff Hale, Rob Coleman, Phat Ejercitado, Bill Plimpton, Bill Mathews and even a week with Ishu Patel. Then he joined the state of art work platform of world's one of the ten best Animation Production Company, Toonz Animation India Private Limited. He obviously got a lot of great memories with the production floor of Toonz Animations, as an animator of the outsourced productions from giants in the global animation scenario such as Walt Disney Productions, Warner Bros, Marvel, Rainbow Productions etc.
At the same time, he started to write poems in famous Malayalam periodicals such as Bhashaposhini, Kalakaumudi, Kerala Kaumudi, Deshabhimani, Prasadhakan, Prabhatharashmi and a lot of other magazines. Now he is in the second decade, with the visual media industry, he is the director of famous Vismayasmax Animation Academy and Studios private limited India. In 2022, he has been appointed as the General Council Member of Kerala State Chalachithra Academy.
Legacy
He worked as a Television show director (Vivekom – Kairali TV), Animation Director for Hollywood writer, Joanne Reay's e-book trailers Lola, Romeospikes and Outpost, VFX Director of 2015 National Games of India Opening Show "Kunjali Marakkar". Recently he has written lyrics for the upcoming Mohanlal Project 'Akananooru' along with the Legendary Kavalam Narayana Panicker.
