Kaali[1] is a 2020 Indian Hindi-language web television series, starring Paoli Dam and Abhishek Banerjee in lead roles. It premiered on ZEE5 in 2020.
It is the story of a woman who is above all, a mother, fighting all odds to save her son's life. It is her son, first, and then the path of righteousness because of which she is caught in troublesome and risky situations. Being a woman from an economically weaker section of the society, amidst a drug ring, it is no less than a chase where Kaali tries to run for her son's life. It is not only the police but also the rival drug lords like Jin Liang and Swapan who are after Kaali and her son, Sunny. The weak monetary condition and desperation to reach out to her son with oxygen cylinder(s) in ten hours is a path set with difficulties. It becomes a tough battle for Kaali to escape from the clutches of Swapan as she betrays him and reaches out to Aniket, the police officer for help. Aniket, too, is caught in a trap where he is trying to clear his name for attempting murder of his fellow officer in order to rescue Kaali and her son. Caught in a conflict, Aniket betrays Kaali just when she walks up to him, looking for hope. Packed with selfless love, murders, betrayals, chase, fear and fearlessness, it is the story of a woman's discovery of her stronger self. She discovers herself as a bold, formidable woman who knows how to keep and use secrets.[2]
Kaali is a nail-biting thriller, coupled with tension, action and drama where she emerges from a state of quandary to a state of fearless, daunting woman who knows to stand for herself. It is an interesting celebration of power[disambiguation needed], femininity and motherhood.[3]
Synopsis[edit]
It was one harrowing night which turned Kaali's[4] life upside-down. In her attempts to keep her eighteen-year-old son away from the underbelly and his criminal father, she started working as a beautician to support herself and her son. But trouble finds her as her son is thrown off a high-rise building. She is required to accumulate a monumental sum of money for his treatment. Her son, Sunny, needs an artificial lung which works on the continuous supply of oxygen, from a cylinder. Hailing from a poverty-stricken background with not much economic relief she is trapped in a cob-web. Her dire need for money forces her to delve into the world, which, she had been avoiding but is caught by the police. It leads to one such situation where her son is breathing on the last cylinder of oxygen. Kaali needs to make an arrangement for another such cylinder within ten-twelve hours.[5]
Aniket, the good police-officer who is compassionate towards Kaali[6] reaches out for her help. He not only intervenes the interrogation but also helps her escape from police custody. In doing so, another official makes notice of this act performed by Aniket, betraying his duty. Aniket doesn't want to leave any proof behind and shoots at this officer so as to kill him. Unfortunately, he doesn't die. The paramedical team helps him reach the hospital in time. The officer goes to a comatose state after suffering severe blood loss but he is still not dead. Akash, a loyal of Jin Liang, helps Aniket to remove the proofs and even kill the hospitalised officer who stands as the only evidence against Aniket, now. Jin Liang is the son of a woman who was trafficked from Bangladesh into prostitution. Her father, on the other hand, was Chinese.
He was raised in the brothel by the mistress of the place who, lovingly, called him Shona. In no time, as he reached his teenage, he gave into petty crimes and soon emerged as the ruling head of the underbelly. He managed to rule and thrive on both lands, owing to his ability and knowledge in both Chinese and Bengali language and culture of the two, territorially separated regions. He is behind Kaali and her son and want them dead soon. He employs his men for this job who are at work, trying to trace the mother and the son while the two are aware of this and are on a run, for a safer place.[7]
As Kaali[8] escapes from the police custody to save her son, Dilip escapes from the prison in order to kill Kaali and Sunny. Jin Liang is the mastermind behind Dilip's escape. Jin Liang is also a rival of Swapan. Swapan, another head in this drug business and part of the rising underworld in the city of Kolkata was the one who trained Dilip and sharpened his skills of survival in this trade. None the less, it is clear that Dilip has already betrayed Swapan. Dilip informs Kaali about the big drug consignment that is supposed to reach Kolkata but before they could go further, the police intervene and captures this. The consignment is now in police custody and Kaali needs to steal it for Swapan, upon condition to leave Sunny. Kaali fails but Swapan provides her another opportunity as he believes in Kaali's potential and connections. He also saves her son. He wanted her to take help of Aniket and head for a warehouse loot where this drug was. But Kaali has persevered hard to bring her son out of the clutches of the underbelly.[9]
She betrays Swapan and seeks solace with Aniket where she discovers another betrayal. She shatters after discovering that Aniket has not only betrayed her but also attempted to kill an innocent man who could jeopardize his official position.[10] By then, Aniket has already informed Akash of where he could trace Kaali and Sunny. Meanwhile, Roop has already traced Sunny and Kaali at Aniket's house. Roop realizes his mistake after he has a confrontation with Sunny who forgives him and still considers Roop as his friend. Roop was there to harm Sunny and Kaali but before he could enact, Kaali shoots Roop, from behind, in order to save her son, Sunny. She leaves Aniket's house with Roop.
Kaali[11] is now in a situation where she has nowhere to go but to Swapan's den. She joins him and trains herself to be a part of the underbelly, now. Gupta, on the other side, is an officer of few words who doesn't digest that Aniket says but she doesn't argue. It is her eyes that speak.
As the story progresses, the warehouse loot occurs with a lot of gunshots and murders. Sanatani's paralysis comes to the foreground, which,h he had tried to disguise in the best possible way. It is the same paralyzed hand with which he manages to shoot and kill Dilip, just at the right time before the latter could kill him. The loot, however, clears the picture around other police officers such as Gupta and Sanatani who were working in liaison with Jin Liang so never harmed Akash, either. Kaali transforms from a timid, weak woman who wanted to stay away from crime to a woman who masters her art. She joins back the underbelly with Swapan who gives her another opportunity and tries to keep her son away from this.[12]
