Plot

Kabaad-The coin portrays the blind race towards attaining money and compels one to think about the reality of the ultra-modern[11] youth's mentality. They want to earn a lot of money, have fun and party. Money is everything, it doesn't matter how the money comes – right or wrong. The story revolves around a boy named Bandhan (Vivaan Shah), who lives in the chawl of Mumbai[12]. One day he finds a bag full of gold coins (antique pieces) which is being searched for by Mumbai police, underworld figures, and a drug-addicted couple, Sam and Roma (Zoya Afroz).

Production

After Manjhi-The Mountain Man[13], filmmaker Varadraj Swami started working with Shahzad on projects shot at real and difficult locations in Mumbai. For Kabaad- The Coin, the director decided on real locations including Marine Drive, real chawls, highways, and discotheques. Varadraj Swami and co-producer Deepak Prajapat gathered a team of line producers to shoot the film.

Writing

Kabaad - The Coin is a story of a new era in India[14][15]. Director Varadraj Swami and writer Shahzad Ahmed worked on the plot of Kabaad - The Coin[16]. Researching the Kabaadi concept and antiquity required major time investment. To develop each thought, the team explored the Kabaadi Market and interacted with sellers. They also researched antique coins, their market, valuation criteria, and auction world. The team then scripted the film.

With the script in development, many senior members of the film industry offered their views and suggestions, resulting in an improved script. First, the script was shared with Ketan Mehta for his suggestions. Then Sandesh Shandilya, Anil Pandey, and BL Gautam added their input. With the final script ready, production began.

Casting

Kabaad - The Coin required a dedicated actor[17] who could embody the character. Varadraj Swami had seen previous work by Vivaan Shah and he was the first choice. Varadraj narrated the story to Vivaan Shah, who immediately liked the concept, describing it as a classic narration. The problem was Vivaan’s schedule. He was busy with Mira Nair’s A Suitable Boy[18][19]. It was difficult for the production house, as producer Babban Negi had already announced the shoot date. Varadraj Swami, unwilling to delay, began looking for other actors. Twenty-five actors were auditioned, but the producer, unconvinced, waited for Vivaan Shah to clear his dates. Varadraj Swami[20] decided to postpone the film by two months. The workshop and production house began shooting once the cast was ready.

Filming

The backdrop of Kabaad - The Coin was Mumbai, and Varadraj Swami decided to shoot at real locations[21], taking around ninety days to prepare. The story was in three parts. For the first part, Vivaan’s school life required a natural skin tone, whereas the second part required a tan skin. Vivaan was given one month to tan his skin. He did so within the timeframe and achieved the “Ragman” Kabaadiwala look, completing the shoot. The third part of the shoot was scheduled in Goa.
