Kadile PapaHareshwar Temple is located near Kadile village, which is around 20 kilometers from the Nirmal district headquarters. The temple is located in the forest of Sahyadri Hills and in a small valley surrounded by highlands. A stream is flowing beside the temple. Rocks, a variety of trees, monkeys, and a water stream resemble a perfect forest environment. Nizamabad and Adilabad are places with distances of 60 and 70 km respectively. The most convenient way is to take a bus or taxi from Hyderabad. There is no accommodation available at the temple because of the forest area, but one can stay in Nirmal, which is only 20 km away, and 240 kilometers from Hyderabad. Pilgrims coming by train would need to alight at the railway station in either Nizamabad or Adilabad.

Legend

As per Hindu legend, the presiding deity in the form of Linga (an iconic form of Shiva) was erected and worshipped by ParashuRama.

Mahashivaratri is the main festival celebrated here.

History

There is no inscriptional evidence about this temple, but the architecture and the sculptures resemble a temple dating back to the 10th to 12th century CE.

Architecture

The temple complex covers 1 acre and is built in Western Chalukyan style, with the sanctum sanctorum facing west. There were beautiful sculptures of Shringi and Bringi as dwara palakas (Gate Keepers) inside the ardha mandapa, but they were broken, so they have been removed and kept outside. Another set of new statues of Shringi and Bringi have been erected in the place of the old ones, but they are not up to the standard of the old ones.

Beautifully carved sculptures of Keshava and Adi Varaha are on the left and right sides of the outside of the sanctum sanctorum. The two hands of the Chennakeshava sculpture were damaged. Another beautiful sculpture is of Nandi, which is well ornamented and placed in the middle of the maha mandapa (Main Hall).

A sculpture of Brahma with three heads visible and with broken four arms, but with a visible sruk (A device of Brahma used in Yagna), is fixed to the north side of the Temple. Ganesha and Bhairava statues are to the east and south sides of the walls of the temple.

Goddess Annapurna shrine

There is another small shrine located immediately northeast of the temple, which is dedicated to the goddess Annapurna, consort of the lord Shiva. But the statue of the deity has no properties of goddess Annapurna, which indicates that the statue may belong to some other deity but is mistakenly worshiped as Annapurna. Decoration and ornamentation to the statue make it impossible to see the original one unless the priest removes the decoration.

There are other beautifully carved sculptures of Umaalingana Murthy (Uma+Alingana) and Thandava Shiva. Umaalingana murthy is seated on his mount Nandi with broken hands and legs, and small sculptures of Ganesha and Karthikeya are on both sides. The Thandava Shiva sculpture with broken hands and legs is also accompanied by small statues of dancing Ganesha and Karthikeya.

There are many other sculptures which are beautifully carved and belong to the ancient period, and were thrown outside of the temple with carelessness.
