Kae Sasaki is a Japanese-born visual artist based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and working in oil paint, bronze sculpture.[1]
Education[edit]
Sasaki received her Bachelor of Arts degree in German Literature at Rikkyo University立教大学 in Tokyo, Japan in 1999 and B.F.A. First Class Honours from the School of Art, University of Manitoba in 2012. Her senior painting thesis, In Praise of Shadows received Alice Hamilton Painting Prize and Lynn Sissons Memorial Scholarship, and her bronze sculpture Girl Walking in Flowers earned her Cecil C. Richards Memorial Award for Achievement in Figurative Sculpture and Sculptural Experience Award from the Collaboration to Promote Art and Music (CPAM).
Her first exhibition after BFA Honours, In Praise of Shadows (2011-12), was purchased by the Province of Manitoba while her bronze sculpture Girl Walking in Flowers (2012-14) entered the permanent collection at the University of Manitoba. The statue is permanently installed outside University Centre at University of Manitoba Fort Garry campus.[2]
Work[edit]
Sasaki explores an imaginative revitalization of the narrative and atmospheric potential of painting by "negotiating the ability of painting to create visual worlds that are both familiar and extraordinary, rooted in everyday corporeal and spatial experiences, yet taking off into the synthetic domain of image-signs.[3] Her oil portraits of young subjects are thrice recognized by the Kingston Prize, a national award for excellence in Canadian portraiture[4], while her opera paintings have been shortlisted for the Salt Spring National Art Award as well as Jackson's Painting Prize by "impressing the judging panel with the masterful glowing light effects and the sense of enormity and grandeur."[5]
