Kaedegami (Japanese: カエデガミ Hepburn: Kaedegami) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Jun Harukawa, set in a Chinese fantasy gods and demons fictional world. It is serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump magazine, starting in June 2025.
Plot
Kou is a young man who apparently lives alone after he was abandoned as a child by his father in the woods outside Shuraku Village, on the Eastern Frontier. His solitude serves as a cover for his companion: Chiyou, a female shenguai (しんかい shenkai),[lower-alpha 1] who taught him how to survive as a distraction from her loneliness. The shenguai are feared as monsters who abduct and eat humans, so when another one comes seeking food, Kou learns of her true identity as the fallen God of War and together they embark on a quest to restore her body, starting with a face they recovered from the malevolent newcomer.

| Lonely Kou has been raised since he was young by the shenguai Chiyou; they are confronted by a hostile shenguai who taunts Chiyou, the fallen God of War, who confesses she had intended to possess him as her mortal vessel. Kou willingly volunteers his body to defeat the antagonistic shenguai, recovering her face, which he has grown curious to see; this also unlocks a spell for Chiyou which transforms her into an owl. On a scenic river journey, they encounter and behead a giant snake shenguai, dispelling a magical fog. Chiyou expected to find an acquaintance in Tian Rui, but they discover the town is overrun with wild donkeys. A traveling vendor offers delicious donkey meat shaobing, but the vendor's assistant clumsily but deliberately knocks it away before Kou can eat; Chiyou realizes the vendor is Banqiao San Niangzi, a shenguai who enslaved the village by feeding them food which transforms the eater into a donkey. Kou makes her eat the cursed shaobing, forcing her to reverse the spell. Chiyou's restored acquaintance introduces himself as Bai Ze, a specialized type of shenguai, and promises to guide them to the rest of her body. Bai Ze realizes that by granting him access to her power, Chiyou has entrusted her life to Kou, and explains the burden she has placed on him; Kou is unfazed and replies that his greatest fear is disappointing her, vowing to repay her for keeping him alive. Bai Ze directs them to the first part-keeper, Bing, a giant tiger shenguai that lives in a temple. Enroute, they encounter the tiger's victims, a trail of mangled corpses. Bound to his soul, they reanimate as chang gui and Bing attacks Kou. Using the power derived from Chiyou's hand, Bing flings flaming heads at Kou and knocks the human unconscious. | ||||
