Kafayat Sanni

Kafayat Sanni is the first female combatant fighter pilot in the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). She was awarded her wings on 15 October 2019 at NAF Headquarters in Abuja.[1][2][3]

Career[edit]

Kafayat Sanni joined the Nigerian Air Force on the 22nd of December 2012.[4][5]She started training at the 401 Flying Training School at Kaduna. She was the first to fly solo in her class in the training school. She graduated from the school on the 16th of September, 2017. On her graduation, she emerged the overall best pilot in her class.[6]Being the best in her class, she was selected for further training in the United States. She proceeded for training at the US Aviation Leadership program (ALP). The training lasted for a period of 18 months.[7] [8][9][10][7][11]

Kafayat Sanni started the training by attending the Defense Language Institute English Language Center (DLIELC) at Joint Base San Antonio, Lackland, Texas, for special-purpose English training in January 2018. Upon graduating from DLIELC, she proceeded to Columbus in June 2018 to participated in the Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training Class 19-21/22, August 16 at Columbus Air Force Base, Mississippi.[12] At the conclusion of her training in the United State, she returned to Nigeria and was awarded her wings as a Flying Officer in a ceremony on Tuesday 15 October 2019 at the NAF Headquarters in Abuja by The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, and the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Dame Pauline Tallen [4][5] During the award of her wings, she was given an award as the first female to fly Alpha Jets[6] She became the first female pilot to be allocated to fly fixed wing fighter aircraft who went through regular combat training since the NAF was established.[13]
