Kaien Cruz (born April 18, 1998) is a South African singer-songwriter. She is an independent R&B/Pop artist with over 3M streams across all platforms.
Early life
Cruz was born and raised in a small South African town, Pietermaritzburg, with her parents, older brother and older sister. Cruz started playing the guitar at 8 years old as a hobby, which led to her posting short covers on Soundcloud and Instagram in high school. Attracting the attention of local producers after posting a cover on Instagram is how she got her first foot in the door of the music industry at 17 years old.[1]
Career
After being discovered on Instagram and signing a deal with a local South African music label at the time, ‘Wolfpack’, Cruz’s first release ’They’ ft Aewon Wolf was a local radio hit.[2] Shortly after, she released ‘Love Me In The Dark’ with Sketchy Bongo, racking up 1M views on YouTube[3] that led to her being a part of the opening act for Justin Bieber’s Purpose World Tour in 2017 [4] and being nominated for a South African Music Award.[5] Cruz then went on to release her début EP ‘Mansion Mind’ and did a national tour performing for crowds of thousands of people, including multiple national TV and radio interviews.[6] After undergoing some changes in management and becoming an independent artist in 2018, Cruz featured on Nasty C’s No.1 album ‘Strings And Bling’ [7] which was nominated for a BET Award and won the Best Hip Hop Album Award at the 25th South African Music Awards.[8] She was also a part of an artist camp hosted by distribution company ‘Platoon’ based in London, UK.[9] Cruz added a lead by ‘Denzyl Feigelson’, CEO and Co-Founder.[10] Her single ‘Dangerous’ was a product of Platoon's artist camp and was premiered on Ebro’s Beats 1 Radio Show. Cruz has collaborated with several clothing brands such as Converse South Africa. She moved to Los Angeles in 2019 shortly after releasing her latest singles ‘XNO’ and ‘Enormous’ in 2020.[11]
