Kajra Mohabbatwala is a 1968 Hindi film song by Asha Bhosle and Shamshad Begum.[1]
Popularity[edit]
The song became very popular amongst the general mass. It became a common wedding song in India for the next four and a half decades. It is one of the most famous same-sex duets of all time. It was the last ever masterpiece by Shamshad Begum. After 1959 film Kagaz Ke Phool, she was literally exiled from Bollywood. Because in this nine years, Shamshad had less than 3 movies in a year and couldn't supply any notable hit. O. P. Nayyar approached her for a comeback. Shamshad gladly accepted the proposal. She was given offer to sing alongside Asha Bhosle with whom she sang many a duets in her struggling days. But at that time Asha was strong enough to snatch the lead position from Lata Mangeshkar. It was piocturised in a wedding ceremony in which lead actress Babita along with another elderly woman came to stage to amuse the audience. Interestingly, Babita was guised as a male as she attached a moustache right above her lips. She started teasing that other woman saying "Kajra Mohabbatwala, Akhiyon Mein Aisa Dala, Kajre Ne Le Lee Meri Jaan, Hai Re Main Tere Kurbaan" refers that "You've put colyrium in your eyes in such a way that it has snatched my life and I've been a devotee of you". Two important places are noted in the lyrics titled "Delhi" and "Meena Bazar". The line was, "Aayi Ho Kahan Se Gori, Aakhon Mein Pyaar Leke, Dilli(Delhi) Shehar Ka Sara Meena Bazar Leke". The rommance between two women won the hearts of the few audiences sitting in front as shown in the movie as well as millions of audiences outside the silver screen.
