"Khamoshiyan" (English: Silences) is a romantic Hindi song from the 2015 Bollywood film of the same name.[1] Composed by Jeet Gannguli, the song is sung by Arijit Singh, with lyrics penned by Rashmi Singh.[2] The music video of the track features actors Ali Fazal, Sapna Pabbi and Gurmeet Choudhary.[3]
Background[edit]
The producer of the film, Mukesh Bhatt asked the composer, Jeet Gannguli to compose "music of silence", without any further briefing. Hence Gannguli back in his home, thought about the music and composed a "piece of the song" late into the night and played the tune to Bhatt over the phone. The song is sung by Arijit Singh. According to Gannguli: "Singh is one singer who has a voice which sounds amazing, particularly for songs that have a classical base, which is why we opted for him".
The music video of the track features actors Ali Fazal, Sapna Pabbi and Gurmeet Choudhary. In the video Chaudhary is shown to be a part of the frames that Pabbi's character is reminiscing about.[3] As the story revolves around a love triangle, Pabbi is seen romancing both Chaudhary and Fazal in the song. The sequence of the song is shot at scenic location from South Africa. In an interview, Bhatt stated- "It is a sensational song. One of the best songs that I have heard in my lifetime and its poetry is simply brilliant. Very few songs will ever match the intensity of the Khamoshiyan song".[4]
Release[edit]
Sony Music India released a 60-second audio edit of the title track, "Khamoshiyan", five days before the full version was released.[5] The audio file was made available for free download on two platforms- Xperia Jive and Airtel, and was also available on Saavn for online-streaming. Upon release, the song broke single day records for streaming, search and sharing on Saavn. The full song was digitally released on 13 December 2014 as a single. The music video of the song was officially released on 15 December 2014, through the YouTube channel of Sony Music India. The song is included in the soundtrack of the album which was digitally released on 29 December 2014. The album was officially launched in an underground music launch on 22 December 2014, marking India's first ever music promotional activity of the kind.[6]

Critical reception[edit]
Rajiv Vijayakar writing from Bollywood Hungama was pleased with the "soulful" singing by Arijit Singh and his "flawed pronunciation of words with the ta syllable" while toning down the melody. Vijayakar further wrote: "A true-blue flight of imaginative fantasy, the song compares khamoshiyan (silence) with everything from a sky to a silent river, with the peak in the mukhda itself".[10] Kasmin Fernandes from The Times of India wrote: "The title track is a haunting melody sung by Arijit Singh. Jeet Gannguli's arrangement is classy and Rashmi Singh's lyrics rise to the fresh tune".[11]
Surabhi Redkar from Koimoi picking the song as "one of the best songs from the album", appraised the "beautiful composition" by Jeet Gannguli and mentioned that Singh brought "full charm" to this "spell-binding number". Redkar further praised the song: "The song’s momentum picks up slowly and is a soft rock number".[12] Joginder Tuteja of Rediff.com affirmed that "this romantic song has a pleasant feel and maintains a good pace throughout".[13]
Unplugged version[edit]
Mahesh Bhatt and Vikram Bhatt heard the version sung by Singh, and immediately decided to use it in the trailer, since it was a "perfect fit to the theme of the film that spoke about silences having secrets and went superbly with the visuals cut for the trailer".[4]
Critical reception[edit]
Rajiv Vijayakar writing from Bollywood Hungama described the lyrics of the version by Rashmi Singh as "different but equally effective". Vijayakar felt that the piano notes in the composition make a "masterly effect" for the version.[10] Kasmin Fernandes from The Times of India wrote that the unplugged version is a "delight for the ears".[11]
Calling the version "extremely beautiful" Surabhi Redkar from Koimoi felt that, this version is "as good as the original": "Although since I am a lover of songs with a certain calm attached to them, I liked this unplugged version better".[12] However, Joginder Tuteja of Rediff.com thought that the unplugged version is good, "but one wants to hear the original track over and over again".[13]
